Re: Tuning Preference?

For me, besides being set in my ways, another factor is playing with other guys. If they're in standard and you're down-tuned at a jam, expect problems. You can't just look at what they're doing and figure out the chords. Also, I learn a lot of songs with tab and videos, and down-tuning makes that more difficult. There's enough to learn with guitar without having to transcribe everything to different frets.

Re: Tuning Preference?

My guitars are tuned from E std all the way down to B std. My personal preference is Drop C. Open C is cool as well.

Well then the other guys can tune down too. It's not that big of a deal, especially if the song you're writing sounds better in a different tuning. That's why my bassist uses a 5 string - I can switch from my standard tuned guitar to my C# standard guitar and he doesn't have to do **** except stand there and look pretty.

Re: Tuning Preference?

Following other people who are in standard tuning when you are tuned differently is not an issue, if you actually know how to play in that tuning.

Re: Tuning Preference?

A440 EADGBE. Unless I'm playn slide G# might come into play. SRV maybe 1/2 step down..

Re: Tuning Preference?

I have enough trouble finding the right notes without trying to juggle in a rollercoaster.

There are no right notes -- just ones that are less obviously wrong than others.

Re: Tuning Preference?

I like playing a full step down from standard for my original stuff. Having a guitar in normal standard is always nice though.

It is at a jam, when you're expected to pick tings up on the fly, play songs you've never heard before and figure out chords and chord progressions.

In settings like that, where you can sometimes barely hear yourself and each other, it's a huge help if you can just glance over at another player's fretboard to see what they're doing.

Re: Tuning Preference?

Acoustic - standard EADGBE
main guitar when practicing with friends - 1/2 step down
playing heavier stuff - down 2 steps to C

Re: Tuning Preference?

Where do we begin?

Six String Tunings:
E Standard (E-A-D-G-B-E)
Dropped D (D-A-D-G-B-E)
Eb Standard (Eb-Ab-Db-Gb-Bb-Eb)
Dropped Db (Db-Ab-Db-Gb-Bb-Eb)
D Standard (D-G-C-F-A-D)
Dropped C (C-G-C-F-A-D)
Dropped A Variant of E Standard (A-A-D-G-B-E)
Dropped A Variant of D Standard (A-G-C-F-A-D)

Seven String Tunings:
B Standard (B-E-A-D-G-B-E)
Dropped A (A-E-A-D-G-B-E)
Dropped A Variant of Dropped D (A-D-A-D-G-B-E)

We use some interesting tunings. I think my Two Favorites are Dropped Db and Dropped A Variant of Dropped D. Dropped Db sounds heavy while Dropped A Whatever has some interesting chords to use in it.

Re: Tuning Preference?

I'll mess around with different tunings here and there but normally all of my guitars are in standard. :D

Re: Tuning Preference?

Open C, open B, and some odd A tuning on my 6s.

Just got a 7 and have yet to fiddle with that, but I'm sure it'll be fairly low.

Re: Tuning Preference?

Most of my guitars are in standard tuning and I currently have 1 guitar in Eb tuning.

I've just joined a new band that do everything in Eb though so it may be time to get a few more guitars moved over to Eb permanently.

Re: Tuning Preference?

Mostly always in standard. I mix it up for some songs when I play slide, sometimes I play slide in standard. I also love playing some funky bluesy rock in Eb, something about that key when played with a strat.
