Tuning question..

Im sorry this is prolly a newb thing, but Im stumped... Im comparing axes to try to determine keepers vs sellers.. Shootout today was Dean Soltero 2009 Bella Noir vs 80s Burny.
First, the Burny spanked it in output, but I know this is a pickup thing as I have BK Rebel yell set in the Burny.
Sustain is close and the Dean has a nice slightly slimmer neck.

The issue I have and cant figure out tho... When playing the higher strings, like a D chord, the Dean sounds out of tune. I checked tuning several times, (good) and checked intonation, (again good). What would cause and how to fix? Usually, its something with the intonation or something I can tweak. This has me alil stumped. Especially again since Im in a time crunch and all... Thanks

Re: Tuning question..

If it’s playing out of tune up the neck, that would mean the intonation needs adjusting.

How did you check it? The 12th fret harmonic should exactly match the 12th fret fretted note. If the action is higher the notes will sound sharp.

If the 12th fret notes are in tune we would have to assume something is wrong with the placement of the frets, but that seems unlikely.

Maybe the strings are old?

Re: Tuning question..

Taller frets and heavy touch allowing you to press it out of tune? I did that a lot when I started

Also, very worn frets will stop playing in tune . . . especially if they've developed big divots.

+1

Don't know why I didn't think of that on first read, but I can always tell it's time to change strings (if they're not sounding dead) when they won't play in tune.

I cant tell you how many times ive adjusted the intonation, only to swap strings and discover the strings were the problem not the intonation.

Re: Tuning question..

Your anxiety may also be causing you to press on the strings heavier than normal. The Burny most likely has small LP "fretless wonder" style frets, so you can't really press it out of tune, the Dean most likely has jumbos, so you can press the strings out of tune with a heavy grip. With jumbo frets you really shouldn't be pushing the strings to the wood.

Hmm.. replied to this yest.. but didnt save. Yes, you are most likely right. (you usually hit stuff on the mark).. I calmed down a bit, retuned, rechecked intonation (was good) and things were better. Im sorry Im being a noob dimwit these days, Just feel like everything is crumbling..

Dean frets are not Jumbos.. wish they were, but they arent tiny either. Burny isnt quite fretless wonder either. I HATE those fretless wonder frets. I Like big frets and I cannot lie.... lol
But things are ok now. whew... The Burny def sounds bigger... But Im SURE that is a pickup issue.. BK Rebel Yells vs stock Deans.. Although the DOA Dean run buyers had the option of getting reg Dean pups or the upgraded Dean aftermarket pups. Mountain of tone and NOA?... My original one I opted for the upgraded ones. Ive not pulled to pups on this one to see if it has the the upgrades or not. Will Check next time I do a string change.. Either way, will most likely change seeing the diff tween these two guitars.

Thanks for your input and patience with my temp insanity!
