Tuning your "rig" for different guitars

Re: Tuning your "rig" for different guitars

I use multiple guitars for when I want to mix it up. The settings never change, just the many switches I love having on the guitar.

Re: Tuning your "rig" for different guitars

I do nothing at all. The whole point of having different guitars is to get a different tonal response from each one. Why would I fight that by tweaking the amp?

+1. I take two different kinds of guitars to gigs, so I have the variety.

Re: Tuning your "rig" for different guitars

I cheat a little bit by using different inputs on my Fenders. For instance, on my Vibrolux Reverb channel 1 is "hotter" than channel 2, so I'll run my Tele into channel 1 and my ES-335 into channel 2 so they aren't radically pushing the amp in different ways. I'll keep the tone and volume typically set the same so there are still big tonal differences between the two, but I find using the padded inputs I can get my tones to be the way I'd expect them to be and my pedals will have the same effect regardless of which guitar I choose.

This, except with a JTM45 or Hiwatt and using the hi/lo inputs on the same channel. I don't consider it cheating. Different guitars have different output. To reuse the same tone and gain settings, I need the guitars to be coming in at nearly the same level as much as possible. Whatever amount the input doesn't buy me I handle with the volume on the guitar.

Re: Tuning your "rig" for different guitars

I'm fairly certain I'm just not going to be able to have my rig dialed in for the Strat/Tele and the LP as its currently setup. The Fenders are perfect, neck tone is deep and slightly dark, the mid and notch are balanced and the bridge is bright without being harsh.

The LP is just muddy through this setup, but its got huge (older) strings, tuned to C and has a Custom/59 setup. I bet changing back to A2, .010s and E standard will fix these issues. I'll start with the string gauge and tuning. (Either that or reserve the LP for the heavy/metal rig)

Re: Tuning your "rig" for different guitars

I don't know why you don't just try using a 6-10 band EQ pedal to switch on when playing the LP. You can modify the tone with the sliders, and if the LP is hotter (which it probably is), also lower the level with the EQ level slider.
