turned my marshall up to 7 today and...

Our Neighbor Totoro
My brain melted and goop ran out of my ears. it couldn't take the massive amounts of tone and gain coming from the DSL50.
it's insane how much more gain comes from the el34s. I thought the pre-amp was crazy... holy crap the power tubes add way more to the mix than I ever thought possible.
sustain sustain sustaiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn feedbackkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!11!!!!!111 Freakin AWESOME!!1!!
Before today I'd only ever ran it up to 4 on the red channel. 7 is much crazier, and it's LOUD as HELL.

Presence, treble, and mids all on 6, bass on 4
deep switch out, tone shift out,
ultra gain channel vol. on 7, gain on 10, guitar volume on 5 for rhythm and 10 for lead

guitar was a yamaha EG112 w/ the C5. the c5 with it's scooped mids is like a perfect match for the DSL. I wasn't missing any midrange at all.

It was a wonderful experience and I'm glad no one called the cops.

Ya any tube amp (marshalls especially) are going to sound better the more you crank them. Gotta cook those power tubes!

I didn't realize what they meant by "better" until a hour ago.
I can only imagine what it would be like through a 4x12. You people with half stacks must be crazy.

Re: turned my marshall up to 7 today and...

Ya I actually plugged my Laney AOR head into my friends 4x12 cab yesterday. We took it out behind his house to this old parking lot and I had the pre-amp volume at 10 and the master at around 7 or 8 and I think I actaully was pushing so much air out of the speackers that I was blowing around the dirt and stuff that was on the ground. But oh man, the tone out of the thing was AMAZING!

a tube amp isnt going to do much of anything until you are pushing enough voltage through the tubes to get them to break up

my power tubes start to break up on 4, which is as loud as I've ever gone before. They're goin hard by 7. The 65W Speaker is getting worked out by 5 or 6 it seems.

Re: turned my marshall up to 7 today and...

A lot of amps have a spot on the master about 2/3 up where you hear everything just kinda "kick in" on a new level, like a slight jump in everything the amp does.
I hit a chord and started turning the master up so I could hear when it hit that point and as soon as I hit 7 all I could say was "Waffo!"

Re: turned my marshall up to 7 today and...

I've been wanting to take my JVM410H full stack and my 5150 full stack out to the country at a friend of mine's, and just crank the ever lovin crap out of them. They'd probably be heard 5 miles away...lol.

What you guys are hearing is the phase inverter being overdriven combined with power tube compression and speaker compression/breakup.

It sounds great, but one shouldn't assume that what you're hearing is 'power tube distortion' since it's a bit of a misnomer.

I say "F*ck yeah!"... but whatever.

Kids are strange...

Re: turned my marshall up to 7 today and...

I've owned a few 50 watt Marshalls (three in the stable currently) and I've always found that 7 is the magic number.

Re: turned my marshall up to 7 today and...

Try it sometime with 2 4-12's sitting side by side. Then, you'll really hear it's mighty roar.

Re: turned my marshall up to 7 today and...

All the tone goods in a tube amp are at higher volume- gotta get that speaker flappin and the tubes/circuit juiced.

You need to try a Metalface or Plexi dimed- its better than sex.

Re: turned my marshall up to 7 today and...

I had the opportunity to crank my 1959RR head a few times and it always puts a smile on my face. It's magic spot is plugged into the cascade input and both volumes on 6. If you stand in front of it, it feels like your knees want to buckle.

That's an amp that really needs to be opened up loud. I'd love to have it on 7, with 2 412's, side by side, and an OD pedal. Then, stand in front of it till you can't have children anymore. LOL

id love a 1959RR head. I watched the review on it from Guitar World. and to me, i dont know this may just be me, but I actually liked the tone/gain out of the regular JMP input side than the tone/gain "Randy modded" input side

I would have loved to have one, but $$$$. I'm thinking that since Pinto has owned his for awhile, the blend of the two inputs is where he found the goods. I really wish I could spend a weekend with one of those. Like most Randy Rhoads fans, my eyes popped outta my head when that amp first came out.
