Turser Mosrite not as clean

Just picked this one up and trying it out before a pickup change. I have a SH5 for the bridge and a SH2 for the neck (gold covers) I am wanting to get put in...waiting for some gold colored mounting rings.
The stock pickups on this Jay Turser Ventures Mach 1 Mosman are P90's and the maker rep emailed me that they are about 9K resistance and Alnico 5 magnets.
They sound muddy to me. I'm used to a crisp ringing Stratocaster sound on my 2 Squire strats.
Will the SH5 and SH2 bring out the higher tones I want for Surf and Chuck Berry tone?

You're going the wrong way for surf, if you play it on the bridge. The Custom is a pretty high output pickup.

Are you sure the routs for the p90's in there now will take humbuckers??
p90's are also thicker than strat pickups - and will do chuck berry nicely (with a good quality pickup). Stick to your strats for surf - a p90 won't get the ringing strat tone, but a strat pickup won't get p90 tone either.

I'd buy some nice p90's for that - vintage strength of 7-8k.

Curtis Novak and the SD Custom Shop make Moserite replacements if you're will to pay for them.

From what I have been researching about the Mosrite pickups, they were mostly in the 11-13K resistance range and used a few different magnets, whatever Semie had available in his shop at the time.
Looks like the pickups made by M3 are the closest to the original Mosrite tone.

Re: Turser Mosrite not as clean

K doesn't equal output. If they were wound with 43 gauge (vintage strat and p90s are 42) then the output would be close to the 9k you have in there. If done with 44, then you are more likely going to be in the 8's range.

Needless to say, chuck berry and surf won't be served by 13k pickups, which was what you were asking for tonally.

Hope your journey goes well.

Re: Turser Mosrite not as clean

The Mosrite P90 measure between 11-13K DC resistance (from the websites that have rebuilt and actually have done work on them) and The Ventures who used Mosrite guitars had a Surf sound.

Saw on tube about M3 Mosrite replacement pickups (11-13K DC resistance). They are wound hotter than 8-9K and have the Ventures Surf tone, which is what I am wanting in the Turser Mosman.
I have a Squire Strat for the Dick Dale real biting Surf sound.

Re: Turser Mosrite not as clean

Once again, K doesn't equal output.
Just putting in a SH5 13K humbucker because an original had 13k p90 (most likely with different gauge wire) will NOT give you the same tone, not even close......Am I getting through to you yet??

edit for Duncan's version in the custom shop: http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/custom-shop/specialized-1/duncanmosrite_f/

Thanks for all your knowledge. As the SH5 and SH2 were from an old guitar I sold them to a local guy. I don't know what to get so I'll just wait for now (more confused than I already was )

(more confused than I already was)
That happens to me a lot.

From my experience and understanding, pickup DC resistance is not reliable for judging tone or output.
Do you have any sound clips of your guitar before the swap? Describe your setup (amp/pedals etc).
If you want nothing but that bell-ringing clean, there might be other things in your way.

Welcome! You have now fallen down the rabbit-hole of chasing tone. Enjoy your stay. "You can check out any time you like..."

Re: Turser Mosrite not as clean

I have a Fender Champion 40 amp and with the treble turned up to 10 the bass turned to 0 it still is not as clean as what I want.

Just put in an order for a M3 Mosrite replacement RH100 in white, for the neck, after watching a few videos about M3 pickups. Those are how I want my guitar to sound like.
