TV Jones pickups

Hi

A bandmate of mine is building his very own Billy-Bo guitar from the ground up. Off course he is gonna use T Jones pickups for that classic ZZ Top sound.

Does any user on this forum has any experience with these pickups they are highly appreciated.

Regards

Re: TV Jones pickups

TV Jones pickups are excellent!

I have a pair of Filtertron Classics in a GMP Roxie SS with a Bigsby... they are lower output than a PAF but have a great twang combined with a unique fullness... think early AC/DC when driving a Marshall.

I also have the TV Tron Classics in another GMP Roxie... same deal in a traditional humbucker sized package!

I just got a pair of the Powertrons like used in the Billy-Bo guitar... they are more powerful than the Classics and the Powertron Plus Bridge is everything a hot PAF wants to be... it smokes!

Thank you for the comments - The PowerTrons must be the way to go for his project.

Any more advices are still highly appreciated

Re: TV Jones pickups

bumping an old thread for ease of searching.

i picked up a set of tv classic humbucker mount AKA TV'Tron pickups; the bridge model fitted the bridge slot of my LP without issue, but it bottoms out and sits too high in the bridge slot of a squier tele custom II

sounded fantastic in the LP and the tele would sound good if not better, if the pickup height wasn't killing sustain and making the attack unbearable.

Re: TV Jones pickups

I have a Gretsch with TV Jones pickups. They are good pickups. I think the Billy Bo has a Powertron Plus in the bridge. If you call them their customer support is top notch.

You'll either have to route your cavity a little deeper if possible without going through the body, or get the humbucker sized ones.

Re: TV Jones pickups

I just got my third set of Classics, which will go into a baritone tele project.

however, mine are flush mount, "no ears", and the guitar is routed for those pickups

it sounds like you have regular HB mounts, and the rout is too shallow. I had the same problem trying to fit a Seth into a tele neck slot.

I see a couple of options:
  • measure the neck pickup -- newer ones are 1/8" shallower
  • deepen the rout around the legs

I wouldn't hesitate to call them. They're like a family business, so someone usually picks up the phone, and that's the fastest way to find out if there's something else that would work.

Re: TV Jones pickups

thanks for the replies; i figured i'd need to route the cavity deeper... don't have the tools, time or space to do this though.

so fck that; i'm going to make another dual-screwcoil JB/custom hybrid and see if i can get DMZ airbucker spacers to fit it heh heh

the jones can either go back in my LP, or i'll pair it up with the phat staple that doesn't fit anywhere useful either, when i get a big hollowbody jazz box.

really shts me when this happens. i understand not wanting to sacrifice tone, but manufacturing a humbucker-sized pickup that doesn't fit a standard humbucker rout..?
