twang is one of those terms that people use to describe tone, try to describe blue. you can do it but you end up using some interesting terms or talking about the spectrum of light which would corralate to frequency responce. as for twang, think country music, think telecaster on the bridge pup.

not sure, upper mids and high end? which on a guitar is probably above 2k???

I found something interesting the other day too, my picks all offer drasticaly different amounts of twang, a soft pick makes it twang like crazy, but a steel pick produces no twang.
So, you can play around with that.
Also I believe pickups suspended from a pickguard or steel plate (tele) will produce more twang. But more than less, it just has to do with how the coil is wound, I don't believe a tall coil will produce as much twang as a stouter coil. I really don't think twang is a product of frequency, I believe its a dynamic thing. Like a pinch harmoic, in a sense.

It really is about 90% attitude in your playing technique, but a maple fingerboard, the metal plate surrounding a Tele bridge pickup, etc., all help to give it a little extra snap and spank.
There's a second "twang" that doesn't get talked much about as much and BB King's tone is a classic example, as is Jimmy Page, particularly on The Song Remains the Same live album. Neck and bridge humbuckers together -- as on a 355 or LP, etc. -- give you that 'pinched-nose' twang as I like to call it.
I have my Strat wired so position #3 gives me bridge and neck together for a different version of that particular twang.

Yea, a maple board is a big part of it, also steel bridge saddles help. (Starting to see a patern between brightness and twang.)
But still, some pickups have no twang and some have stupid amounts of it.
So I still think it's mostly in the pickup, and how it reacts to picking dynamics.
I think the part of the pickup that causes it to be twangy is, most tele pickups and strat pickups have magnets for pole pices, instead of a bar with pole pices. Also, output is another factor... Theres so much that goes into it that could cause it that the list just goes on for ever.
I've never heard a dull pickup that twangs either. Does that mean brightness=more possibility for twang?

its just cause maple is naturally a brighter tonewood than rosewood......if you have 2 guitars that are completely same other than one has a maple board and the other a rosewood....the maple one will sound a little brighter, and the rosewood is a little more mellow sounding

That's what I do almost any time I'm trying to coax twang out of a twangless guitar. But you have to be careful. Twang relies on having SOME bass; it helps give the attack weight. I'm having a hard time quite picturing the EQ curve of "twang" but I think it would have fairly strong bass, but reduced low-mids as that seems to be where the mush and flabbiness reside. As long as there are already fairly open sounding highs, I almost never try boosting there for twang, though I will sometimes make very small boosts in the extreme highs, just to add a bit of grit and air. I do almost all the adjustments on the lower half of the spectrum, though.

I agree with all the above descriptions of twang but I have more.
I think 'twang' goes into two catergories. Lead twang... like Duane Eddy. The Ventures, **** Dale where they have really pushed to get a 'twangy' sound by driving the steel strings on their guitars to make the wooden bodies really resonate while adding huge amounts of earth shaking reverb and echo (and even tremelo or vibrato).
That is one twang.
The other kind (to me) is striking an open chord on a bright guitar like a Tele or a Gretsch with the amp just starting to drive and hearing all the notes from bass to treble ring out crisp and sweet..... it actually sounds like......T-W-A-N-G !!!
Turn the drive on the amp up a bit and you get more of a Kerrannngggg!
