Twangbanger...how close to a real tele?

B Bent posted a really nice clip using his Twangbanger.

Anyone else's experience with it would be greatly appreciated, and I'm now contemplating getting one for myself.

The clip sounds damn nice, though I wonder if it may have too much in the way of mids? Is the output about the same as a tele?

many thanks :cool2:

Re: Twangbanger...how close to a real tele?

It's not a full on tele pickup. It's bigger sounding, fatter with more mids than the typical tele bridge. It doesn't have quite that presence or steely bite that a tele single has, but it gets closer than other bridge strat singles I've tried and while I can only speak for myself, it got it close enough for me to be able to really enjoy my strat without needing a telecaster.

My favorite strat has the TwangBanger in the bridge and Antiquity Surfers in the middle and neck spots.Played that guitar tonight as a matter of fact.I own 2 Teles and I can't say the TB duplicates the sound of a good Tele bridge pickup, but it's a great strat bridge pickup.

i agree with john. i think its a fantastic strat bridge pup but it doesnt turn your strat into a tele. alot of the tele bridge pup sound comes from that bridge plate which you aint gonna get on a strat.

NOT SO FAST MATE . . .

. . . Warmoth can make you a strat body w Tele plate :naughty:

I will smply pawn that strat & just buy a Tele.

Re: Twangbanger...how close to a real tele?

You can make your own baseplates easy enough, I do.

Re: Twangbanger...how close to a real tele?

yes, strings thru body and the bridge pup attaching to the bridge plate. if you do that on a strat with a twangbanger i bet it would sound pretty tele like.

Re: Twangbanger...how close to a real tele?

I have two of these pickups. One is combined with APS-1 centre and neck PUs. The other is combined with Five-Twos.

IMO, the TB is best described a beefy Strat PU with a hint of T and, maybe, a hint of P90 - depending upon how you amplify it.

The illusion of Telecasterishness is enhanced by playing the sort of licks associated with Teles. Both of my TB-equipped Strats have the six-screw vibrato bridge resting against the body wood. Hence, multiple string bends can be executed without pulling the remaining strings off pitch.

Re: Twangbanger...how close to a real tele?

I think i may just try the baseplate, for now, on the Curtis Novak I have in there.

I agree with this. Seymour just made me a killer Strat (Eric Johnson body, custom shop neck) and this is the exact setup in it -- though Seymour makes his TwangBangers with flat poles. It's one of the best-sounding Strats I've ever played.

Re: Twangbanger...how close to a real tele?

The Twangbanger is really a fantastic pickup. Very punchy yet bite-y. It sounds pretty darn Tele-ish to me, but then I don't own a tele to A/B against. I do find that it is pretty mid-y, so I took off the baseplate (per Jeremy's recommendation) and it lessened the mids some and added some treble and bite and I prefer it. It also does a another really cool thing - I use a master tone control and when I roll down the tone some, it really fattens up kind of like a humbucker.
And like Seymour, mine has flat poles, but I had to grind mine down....!
Love my TB + SSl-2s.
