Hey guys.
Just installed a set of (2) SSL1's and (1) Twangbanger.
All I can say is, WOW!!! finally, after years and years of going thru different pickups, I think I've finally found the perfect strat set! The SSL1's to my ears are the perfect strat pickup. That classic high end, but not shrill in the least bit, but still they've got smooth midrange and wonderful bass response.
The Twangbanger is BANGIN!!! Perfect midrange, great low end, and just enough treble to twang, but not too much to make the bridge position sound tinny. Cleans sound rich and full, crunch sounds powerful, high gain leads sounds incredible! I HATE HATE HATE the bridge position on strats, but this pickup makes it not only useable, but 100% likeable!
Just cuz I'm bored, I'm gonna recap all my pickup swaps in what started out as a 96 Strat Plus.
1. 3 Gold Lace Sensors
2. 2 Gold, 1 Red
3. 2 Gold, 1 Silver
4. 3 80s Japanese Single Coils
5. 2 Jap Single Coils, 1 Dimarzio SDS1 (awesome tone, but major feedback)
6. 2 Jap single Coils, 1 Duncan Hot Rails
7. 2 Jap Single Coils, 1 Carvin APS1 (Booooo)
8. 2 Jap Single Coils, 1 Duncan Hot (Great pickup, just not for me)
9. 1 Duncan Hot, 2 Duncan Custom Flats. (Also, ripped out the LSR nut, put in a vintage bone one, added non locking tuners, blocked the bridge, and added a mint green pickguard and aged plastic parts).
10. Dimarzio Blue Velvet and Red Velvet Set.
11. FINALLY!!!!! Duncan SSL1 and Twangbanger. DONE DONE DONE!!!
So about 10 years later, and a million pickups later, this guitar is done.
Thanks to everyone on their reccomendation for this set. Its absolutely perfect.
PS. To fix the loose Twangbanger baseplate, reheating it with a soldering iron worked great, and just to be safe, I added some super-glue all around the edge of it. That thing aint going nowhere now.
