Twangbanger + surfers (... and question regarding reversing the leads)

Hi All,

after reading a number of useful posts on this forum, I decided to purchase the Twanbanger + Surfers combo for my strat.

A couple of questions:

1. I understand that I need ( Twanbanger | Surfer RWRP | Surfer ) and then reverse the leads on both surfers. Is this correct?

2. I was wondering about any side effects of reversing the leads on the Surfers. I read about being noisier, or that the strings touching the polepieces would mute the pickups... for those who have this combo , what is your experience?

Thanks in advance!
Fabiano

twangbanger in the bridge obviously, see which surfer attracts top to top with the twangbanger and put that in the middle. reversing the leads has little or no audible effect to the tone youll get

Or reversing the leads on the twangbanger and soldering the backplate to the white lead wire.

Indeed, but I guess I´d avoid messing with the TB baseplate... think it´s easier to switch the leads on the surfers (as they are the ones 'different from most SD pups)

great, thanks!

Customer support told me to simply use the surfer rwrp in the neck and the regular in the middle to match the Twangbanger (?????).

Well, guess I need to wait for the pickups to arrive and double check the phase/polarity on the pups, maybe my assumptions are wrong...

That's a heck of good advise from the Customer Support.

Ended up reversing the leads on the TwangBanger. As for the back plate, I just added a dedicated wire and grounded it at the pot directly, making it easier to switch leads again if ever needed.

How does this combo sound?

Re: Twangbanger + surfers (... and question regarding reversing the leads)

Well, the surfers are stellar, "3D" is the best word I have to describe them. 10/10.

As for the twangbanger... not so sure , I found it a bit too middy, a bit dull if compared to the surfers. Guess I´m starting to wonder if the custom surfer would have been the logical and correct choice for me... for now I guess I need to spend more time with the TB.

do you have a tone control on the bridge pup? if so, you can take it off and it will brighten up a bit. surfers are a5 and lower wind, twangbanger is a2 and has more turns. the baseplate also reduces treble, you could remove it if you wanted but would have to do a little futzing to get the bobbin to thread properly

Re: Twangbanger + surfers (... and question regarding reversing the leads)

Out of curiosity I tried an old APS-1 neck I had lying around, as it is the 'official' recommendation to go with the TB.

I believe they are indeed a better match to the TB as they have more mids then the surfers. Less of a contrast (eq-wise) when switching from neck to bridge.

But on the other hand I find the surfers perfect, so they are staying. Let´s see if I will get used to the pairing, need more time.

Yeah, the Surfers are magical, and my #1 choice for a true single coil guitar (I also like Five Twos).

Re: Twangbanger + surfers (... and question regarding reversing the leads)

i ran the aps/aps/twangbanger setup for years. really like it, still have it but its not in a guitar sadly.

Re: Twangbanger + surfers (... and question regarding reversing the leads)

Unfortunately I did not bond with the TB/Surf/Surf at all.... got myself a custom surfer for the bridge. Obviously, now it feels like it belongs there.

I was initially afraid the (custom) surfer bridge would be too thin, that´s why I went with the TB. But to my surprise it is not the case, I liked the custom surfers a lot! (the surfers set is simply perfect, period.)

Will later try the TB on another guitar with a set of Fender CS Fat 60´s , A2, I feel they might work better there.
