TwangBanger vs SSL5

TB is vintage overwound with a2 magnets and copper plate. Supposed to mimic telecaster bridge tone. SSL5 is overwound strat pup with a5 magnets.

anybody try them both? Any input on any of them? Like which is more compressed or open

I have an SSL6, which is quite similar to the SSL5, and I love the thickness it put in a strat bridge without losing the strat character. Don;t know about the Banger,

I have the ssl4 and love it. read nothing but good things about the ssl5. looking for more info on TB. Seems like people love it or hate it

Well, one sounds like a much fatter strat. The other has some of the twang of a tele, but is more vintage in tone. Ssl 5 is also 43 awg, which lowers the resonant peak and gives more punch and less sparkle.

Twangbanger is definitely the brighter of the two. Not in a strident way, but has more bite on top. The SSL5 can get pretty dark. In the bridge, I preferred mine with a no-load pot, believe it or not. Without that, I couldn't get it bright enough for cleans.

Im thinking of using the tb in the middle with tonezone bridge. Good idea?

Any particular reason why the Twang Banger??

I just recently matched up a Distortion in the bridge with an SSL-1 in the middle and they are perfectly matched. I was under the misconception that a high output pickup needs a high output middle but when you split the pickups the high output is halved.

I'm just throwing some stuff up against the wall for you.

tb has less output than ssl5. Thought it might work better in middle. don't plan on splitting tz coils. The neck is going to have hwy 1 neck pup.

There's no "wrong" application for any pickup, but a TB in the middle wouldn't really let it do what it was designed to do - Chunky bridge twang.

I think the SSL-5 is the ultimate Strat bridge pickup hands down. I always felt the sound mixes nicely even with vintage pickups in the middle for position 4 (for clean too!). It just smoothes out that ice pick normal bridge pickups need a tone knob connected to suppress.

If that's true than neither are very bright. I've only used the Twangbanger (with a pair of APS-2 pickups) and I wished it was a little brighter. I liked it a lot - I was just expecting a little more Tele twang from it.

Ya know, Lew, it's funny you mention that.... I sometimes wonder if the TB and SSL5 were designed with traditional strat wiring - i.e. no tone pot for the bridge pickup. I always wire my strats with a Tone Pot for the bridge pickup, which, even on 10, rolls off some highs...
