Twin tube classic for Bass?

Hello everyone, I have a quick question that I am hoping atleast one of you will be able to answer for me. I am looking to warm up the tone of my solid state ampeg bass head a bit and give it a little bit of classic tube growl, I cannot afford a quality, rackmount tube bass preamp at this time yet still find myself missing that tone. The other day at GC, I saw a guy messing with the seymour duncan twin tube classic and I was pretty impressed with the difference in sound which later got me thinking maybe it would work as well for bass. I have looked all over and no one can confirm or deny this, everyone seems to agree its a great little unit for guitar, but I'm sure I don't have to tell you folks that what is good for guitar is not always good for bass. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Twin tube classic for Bass?

Welcome to the board.:D I'm thinking the output of the TTC might be a bit to hot for bass? Maybe the rhythm channel with the gain turned down could yield a desirable tone for bass? You want just a Lil' grind right? I'm guessing the TTC may push your preamp into saturation to soon. I would go to GC and ask to audition the TTC for Guitar. (Cuz' I doubt they want you plugging it into a bass rig.):oh: Bring a buddy to run Interference for you. When the salesman isn't looking... Grab a bass and plug it into a bass amp... See what ya get?:14: It's the only way to be sure without dropping $209.

Re: Twin tube classic for Bass?

Thanks for the welcome, and I was thinking the same thing, but the more I read up on it, the more I think it might work, it seems this unit goes as low as 40Hz, which is deep into bass range- I think my babs only go down to 20-30Hz, so that's very bassy....and I was thinking I might run it through my effects loop at the end of the line so its better blended...I guess $200 isn't bad either way because my girl plays guitar and she will definitely use it if I don't....still think the GC idea is a winner though, sounds fun.

Re: Twin tube classic for Bass?

Most preamps, pedals, and processors for guitar work just fine for bass.

Re: Twin tube classic for Bass?

Yeah, I think I'll give it a shot a few in a few different setup arrangements and if I don't like any of them- I will simply give it to my girl, I'm sure it would go nicely with her SS Marshall combo...
Thanks for the input everyone!

Re: Twin tube classic for Bass?

Honestly, I've never used the SFX-03 with a bass, nor have I heard of anyone.

On the other hand, I've heard great things about the SFX-02 Tweak Fuzz and bass.

And welcome to the SDUGF Lemmiwinks!

Re: Twin tube classic for Bass?

Thank you all for the welcome, it seems I'll just have to pick one up as soon as I have the extra money, like I said, if it doesn't work for me, I'll just hand it off to my girl or play with it myself with her guitar- I know for a fact it sounds pretty damn sweet running into a marshall or fender...

DUDE! Just take one into the testing room....

Re: Twin tube classic for Bass?

I'll have to assume that Skopp works for SD.....?
In that case, by all means, please give a test run and post the results, I'm busy looking for a new job at the moment, so I don't really have time to spend at GC, I know that it should only take a min. but every GC trip ends up lasting much longer, as I'm sure I don't have to tell anyone here...

Re: Twin tube classic for Bass?

Although I am still interested in this mystery, I have solved the solution another way.....I've worked a trade so I'm getting rid of my solid state ampeg and trading it for a 5 tube SVT, very excited! I have missed that warm, fat tone that it seems one can't escape with solid state bass amps...SS is convenient, but tube just sounds so much better, if you're all about tone like myself, there is no substitute for tubes....

Peace,
Tom

Yes, the Skopp-man, as well as being the founder of the SDUGF, is the VP of Marketing for SD.
