Two 15W amps = one 30W amp

Guys, just a qiuck one . . .


. . . please help me to settle a heated argument !


I made a statement to a bloke (teenager, but giging for two years already), saying that two 15W valve amps (BJr.s) would be just as loud, if not louder than a single 30W valve amp (Classic 30).

It is one speaker against two.
(both BJr.s will be mic'ed)

So he got c0cky and said if he ad a 1x12 extention cab, w. V30 in it, he WILL blow two stock BJ.s out of the water !

We are taliking in gigging terms here.

Please add your thoughts and experience !

All other things equal, 2 15w amps into 2 speakers will be 3db LOUDER than 1 30w amp into 1 speaker.
Remember 3db SOUNDS twice as loud.

Too many variables to make an intelligent analysis, let alone get into a heated argument. The V30 is a pretty efficeient speaker - 100dB. I don't know what a stock BJ has in it, but if it's only 97 dB efficient, then swapping in a V30 will make it sound like 30 watts by comparison.

All else being equal, more more and/or bigger speakers tend to be louder at a given wattage than smaller/fewer. Moreover, bigger speakers SOUND louder. Example: a small amp through a 4x12 will seem louder to a listener because it has a fatter low end and broader spectrum, so it will seem louder even if a SPL meter says it's the same.

Also, two BJ's willl sem louder to a lot of people since they spread the sound around more. But someone standing right in front of the PV would probably think it is louder.

Stop your silly argument and play. SPL is in no way related to the length of the player's wee-wee.

I think it would depend on what 30 watt amp and what speakers. If it were a 30 watt Dr. Z through a pair of JBL's it could be louder than a couple of Blues Jr's.......I have to admit it sounds like a case of "my Dad can beat up your Dad".

S'pose i just wanted to make a point, as it is in this guy's nature to think he knows everything !

If i went 200mph on my Suzuki, he did 220 - you know, THAT kinda guy !

I just made a casual statement, and he thought what i said came from GOD himself mg:

Can someone here answer this? can you have as a rule of thumb that when you run your guitar through two amps the wattage will be double.?? I am not saying loudness.

Actually, 3db is twice the power, 10db is twice the volume. (10 x power.)

Yes, but only if the two amps are equal power. A 10 watter and a 30 watter would, of course, be 40 watts.

I have an amp that IS two 15W amps running in stereo, each one connected to it's own Vin 30......the Gibson Goldtone 30RVS. I'd imagine it's nearly the same as having 2 Goldtone 15RV's.

I love this amp! It's got 4 EL-84's and reverb, but the two sides have their own transformers.

I often play through two tweed Deluxe amps or two Deluxe Reverb amps.

I don't hear two as being twice as loud as one though.

Wider, fuller, clearer, a little louder and more giggable...but not twice as loud.

I dunno if two 15 watt amps each through it's own 12" speaker = one 30 watt through two identical 12" speakers.
