Two 2x12s or one 4x12?

I currently run my Orange Tiny Terror amp through one 2x12. I have another pair of Vintage 30s lying around. I was wondering whether to get another 2x12 for those speakers and run the amp through both cabinets, or to get a 4x12 and put all four speakers in it. How different does a 4x12 sound compared to two 2x12s on top of each other?

Remember it's not just a matter of having 2 or 4 speakers pushing the air, and it's not just the coupling effect of 4 speakers in proximity to each other- there's the whole thing of them sharing the same baffle, sides and air volume inside the cab.

If I were you, I'd make another 2x12". You can stack them when you play where you need some serious volume or leave one at home when you don't. You could put them apart, giving your sound some more spreading or use one of those as your private guitar monitor. You could stash one in the practice room and one at home so you only have to take your head and your guitar when you practice.

The possibilities are endless with two 2x12" cabs ! None of the above is possible with a 4x12" that's a SOB to move anyway.

2x12s don't kick out the bass punch of a 4x12, but some people find that beneficial. I personally like the sound of 4 speakers in the same cab working together to kick out the jams.
