two copper wires protruding from bobbin tape.

I recently sold an Sh-14 to a customer, when the pickup arrived he noticed 2 strands of copper wire (the size of hairs) poking out from underneath the bobbin tape. I noticed this when I bought the pickup brand new, but never gave it thought, as the pickup worked as it should, and I'm certainly not going to cut it or stuff it . Needless to say my customer is worried the pickup will fail during a show/use, and can't have that happen. Does anyone know why these two strands of wire were sticking out of the tape in the first place? They seem to be separate entities. Are they just pieces of slack left on?

Re: two copper wires protruding from bobbin tape.

How old was the pickup when you sold it?

In my opinion, if the pickup has functioned perfectly for years with the mystery exposed copper strands, it has proven itself.

It is difficult to answer fully without seeing photographs of the offending pickup.

Sounds like a good question for SD cust serv / tech support to address in an official capacity. Marceau, are you out there?

Need pics. It's either a loose scrap piece of wire, in which case its totally meaningless, or it is slack from the coil wire, in which case severing it will kill the pickup.

Re: two copper wires protruding from bobbin tape.

The pickup worked flawlessly for about a year, it was replaced by a pearly gates about a week ago. The customer said he was going to have it tested. So hopefully the shop he takes it to is run by honest brokers. However, in good faith I told him if it was of great concern to return it and I'll refund his money. I feel like I left myself open with that one, but... thats just the way the cookie crumbles. Anyway the wires should be on the screw bobbin, but you can't really see them here. The problem is that these were the pics used and they don't show the wires sticking out.

Re: two copper wires protruding from bobbin tape.

The issue is quickly solved by putting it on a multimeter. If the PU works, I'd put some tape over those exposed wires so they don'tget snagged and short out the PU.

Re: two copper wires protruding from bobbin tape.

The pickup measured at 14.5k before I sent it out. He has decided to return it.

Re: two copper wires protruding from bobbin tape.

Upon receiving the returned pickup, I went ahead and snipped the two wires, pickup still has a resistance reading and works. I guess somebody got lazy during the manufacturing process.
