Two different-sounding EMG 60's... WTF?!

Not too long ago I posted about not liking the 60 as a neck pickup for the 85 in the bridge in my LTD because I found it too low output. I ended up moving that 60 to the neck position of another guitar. It's still low-output, but I really like how it's voiced. Well, I figured what the hell, I still like the EQ of the 60, so I would just get another 60 for the LTD.

I got a second 60 today. I slapped it on my LTD. Bam. It still sounds like a 60 (bright, open, and chimey), but it's noticeably louder. I recorded some DI's to see if it's just not "perceived loudness". Nope. The waveform is louder. The pickup's headroom is exactly the same, though. I mean, if I hit the strings hard, it seems like both pickups' preamps clip at exactly the same level. If I play with the same sort of moderate dynamics, one is quite a bit louder than the other. What could be going on? I'm pretty sure it's either 60 that's an oddity, and this is not because of the difference between guitars, because the quiet one has been on both guitars, and on both guitars, it's been quiet compared to all of my other EMG's. I also made sure the pickup height was consistent.

I guess it's important to say that both were used. The quiet one is from 2017, and it has a slightly different sticker. The new one is from 2016, and it has the same sticker as other EMG's I have. I'm pretty sure neither is a Chinese copy, though. Everything about them seems legit. The mounting tabs, the quick connect terminal, the logo. It just seems like they changed the design of the sticker. I found some EMG's with that same sticker on eBay that look legit.

These are the pickups' backs. The one on the first pic is the quiet one:

Also, the EMG 81 that I got along with the quiet 60 sounds like a regular 81. It's not quiet or odd at all.

So what could be going on? Could it be that the quiet one has been degaussed from being stuck to another pickup? I had never heard of a ceramic magnet losing charge, though. Any thoughts?

Re: Two different-sounding EMG 60's... WTF?!

Alright, just snapped this screenshot of the 4 different waveforms of me playing the same riff with roughly the same dynamics. First is the EMG 85 in the bridge of my LTD. Second is the 60 in the neck of my LTD. Third is the EMG 81 (the 81 which I got in a set with the odd quiet 60) in the bridge of my PRS SE. As you can see, these three are pretty close. As expected, the 85 is on average slightly hotter, but it's not night and day difference. Fourth is the quiet EMG 60 in the neck of my PRS SE. As you can see, it peaks at exactly the same ceiling as the rest of the pickups because it seems like the preamp is working exactly the same. As you can see, though, it's on average MUCH quieter than the rest.

Have a look at the silver EMG logo on the top of the pickup. Some of the fakes have a slightly different font and logo printing is not as good. I'm not saying its fake, but it can be hard to pick sometimes.

Re: Two different-sounding EMG 60's... WTF?!

Both 60's I have look identical from the top. I even measured the logo because the Chinese copies tend to have a bigger logo. I honestly don't think it's a fake. I got the odd 60 in a set with an 81, and that 81 sounds like a run-of-the-mill 81 just like the other 81 from 2013 I have.

Re: Two different-sounding EMG 60's... WTF?!

That’s weird. I have 3 81s, all sound identical.
My two 81's sound pretty dead-on too. I've an 85 arriving in the next couple of days. I hope it sounds the same as the 85 I have now too and not weak like this odd 60.

Re: Two different-sounding EMG 60's... WTF?!

I’ve had a bunch of 81s, don’t remember anything like that happening.

Maybe contact EMG and ask?

Re: Two different-sounding EMG 60's... WTF?!

Any chance it could have been de-magnetized?

Re: Two different-sounding EMG 60's... WTF?!

I will!

I was thinking that too. But can ceramic magnets be de-magnetized?

Well, I think super high temps can demagnetize ceramic, but the plastic would melt first. I am unsure if being placed near very very strong magnets can also demagnetize them.

Re: Two different-sounding EMG 60's... WTF?!

Yeah, sounds like a magnet issue. Possibly a batch that simply didn't get magnetized well or perhaps the pickup wasn't stored properly at some point.

Could even be that the coil assembly got shifted inside the housing slightly, resulting in the rails being further away from the top of the cover. Who knows!

I'd definitely let EMG know...I'll bet they help you out :)

Re: Two different-sounding EMG 60's... WTF?!

Could be that one of em is a miss-labeled 60-A.

How about testing the battery?

Re: Two different-sounding EMG 60's... WTF?!

Thank you, dudes. I'll contact EMG. I doubt they'll help me out since the odd 60 was purchased used, but we'll see what they have to say.

I guess the question still remains, though... can, say, being in contact with an Invader, a Black Winter, a 500T, or something with a monster magnet like that degauss the ceramic magnet in the 60 to this extent?

Yeah, the battery's new. Either way, if the battery were the issue, the 81 in the bridge of that guitar wouldn't work normally, and the ceiling of the pickup's headroom wouldn't be the exact same as the other pickups'.

Re: Two different-sounding EMG 60's... WTF?!

Man we are getting a little bit paranoid at times. e.g. I always found 85 much hotter than 81. Also 81 more noisy than any humbucker I have. Talk to Rick from EMG. They helped me before. (not dimarzio level support but better than nothing).

Re: Two different-sounding EMG 60's... WTF?!

Can not speak of your EMG 60, but I have an old one without quick connector and the output is a tiny bit lower than my S neck/mid.

Re: Two different-sounding EMG 60's... WTF?!

I e-mailed EMG customer service. We'll see what they have to say about this.

And yeah, the 85 is hotter than the 81. The screenshot of my DI's confirms it.

Re: Two different-sounding EMG 60's... WTF?!

From EMG:

The EMG-81 is our highest output pickup. The EMG-85 has slightly less output than the EMG-81, yet still has plenty of output to overdrive an amp. The EMG-85 has more low end and less high end then the EMG-81. The EMG-81 has less low end and is brighter than the EMG-85.
