two magnets for HB?

Every site I go on that sells "Humbucker magnets", Wymore for example, when you look at the photo the magnets are actually the size and dimension of a single coil bar magnet. I always thought HBs used a single magnet, is it true that you have to use two SC-sized mags?

Re: two magnets for HB?

That's what I thought. Why, then, is it that on the Wymore site an "Alnico 2 Humbucker magnet" looks like this:

Am I missing something here, or is that an SC-sized magnet? The photo at Guitarjones also shows a magnet of that size and describes it as a "Humbucker magnet". Same thing at A.M.P.G.E.

No me comprendo!

Re: two magnets for HB?

Pretty sure it just sits between the bobbins flat.

Unless I'm mis-understanding something.

Re: two magnets for HB?

that same magnet you posted sits between the polepieces and screws of both bobbins.

Re: two magnets for HB?

So, I could buy this magnet:

Set it along the underside of my HB with the magnet contacting both coils and call it a mag swap? You'll forgive me if I find this a bit hard to swallow but it doesn't make sense to me that an HB would use a magnet of those dimensions.
I do appreciate the help.

Re: two magnets for HB?

Why don't you open up your pickup and see? Or, better yet.... look at the space between the polepieces on each coil, and realize that the magnet fits right between them.

That looks like a normal-size humbucker magnet to me. Funny color though. Magnets like that are never used for single coils, except for P90's and P90 derivatives (like the Phat Cat).

500T pickup has 3 ceramic mags, as does the Duncan Invader. One normal size ceramic between the coils and two skinny ones on the outside.

Re: two magnets for HB?

Trust me .... that's a standard Humbucker magnet. I have sold hundreds of them and done several swaps myself using them. They are the very same magnets SD uses.

Re: two magnets for HB?

For the record, the reason I couldn't believe that an HB used magnets of that size is that I have a fat strat knockoff which used bar magnets for the single coils and they were that size. Also, the "Humbucker" was in fact two singles with seperate covers pushed together, each with it's own bar magnet, so I always imagined that a real HB would used a single magnet of double the size. That's where my skepticism came from, not from doubting anyone's knowledge on here.
Just wanted to make sure I was buying the right thing in the right quantity

Re: two magnets for HB?

The Gibson Dirty Fingers uses 3 magnets also.

For information's sake, I have a Strat Single that uses 2 small ceramics on either side of slug poles, and the DiMarzio SDS-1 also uses 2 small mags and a humbucker like spacer and threaded poles, like half a bucker.
