Two Rock and Tone King amps?

Re: Two Rock and Tone King amps?

You can read a ton about both over at TGP, Two Rock in particular has several offerings that target the D*mble market. I'd like to plug into a Two Rock John Mayer sig at some point and give it a spin.

Re: Two Rock and Tone King amps?

The youtube clips of the Two Rocks, sound great! It's not really my type of amp, but damn!

both are well made amps and suit some people very well. played a handful of both and they are really nice

Re: Two Rock and Tone King amps?

when I see a 1 x 12" extension cab > $500 I laugh, cringe, or both. it's a small wooden box with a speaker, seriously. the reason most of us pay for ones already made is that we're too lazy to go to home depot and buy the thirty bucks worth of wood to make them ourselves.

They have the audacity to say "An affordable...cabinet."

OK, what's an unfair price for a 1 x 12" cab? Tell me, Two Rock. $600, $700, a thousand? What world are you living in?

Sorry folks, got a bit heated up there.

Lol! Yeah, the prices on that stuff is crazy. I don't know if I could ever pay that. Even if I had the money.

Re: Two Rock and Tone King amps?

Both companies have been around for a decade or more.
They both know there way around the inside of a guitar amp......real well.
It is an age old question of whether or not they are "worth" the price or not. For most guys......probably not. Either is a Mercedes or an Armani Suit.....you can purchase excellent cars and suits for a lot less. Some guys have the money.....so it is no big deal. Other guys.....with less cash.....still see the validity after plugging into one of these offerings. There is no right or wrong.
I enjoy what the guys at Tone King do. For myself.....Petaluma......err I mean Two Rock is not so desirable. But again.....that is JMO.
Best

Re: Two Rock and Tone King amps?

I had a Two Rock Custom Reverb (it's been discontinued and I might have the name slightly wrong). Helluva amp. I got it right as I was just starting to build amps. I actually visited their shop and got to talk to the guys for a while when I was in No Cal. The investment in it was just too high for me to justify. Fender tone with some tone shaping switches. Really a heck of a built amp. I learned quite a bit from it. Then, sold it.

Re: Two Rock and Tone King amps?

Played through both and they are nice rigs. The Tone Kings I have played in particular had REALLY nice big round cleans. Lot of $ though and I liked the Zinkys I have better than both so---.

That's what I see. It's a Fender with few more options. I just don't think I can justify the price tag.

Don't get me wrong, they look great and sound awesome, but a Fender with a couple pedals can get you close enough, for less $.

It's like champagne taste on a beer budget.

I'm a beer drinker.

When I started doing the amp making thing, I wanted to model after Dr. Z. Reasonably priced, good quality.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the TR. It was just gorgeous, but by selling it, I was able to fund several other projects and got the company off the ground. Best move I ever made. I'd own one again if I ever found a steal of a deal on one. I had one of their 2x12's as well and thought the cab added a lot overall.

Re: Two Rock and Tone King amps?

I never had any experience with Two-Rock until recently. The only thing I knew about them was the commendation on snobby forums like TGP which I largely ignored. Once I found out that they cost $4000 and up, I completely disregarded them. However, a few weeks ago that all changed when I finally found a 35 watter to plug into.

It was such an incredible experience playing it that I wrote a little Two-Rock thread here recently. I never had the pleasure of thoroughly enjoying mild overdriven soloing before but Two-Rock changed my mind. It was a revelation of how an amp should sound and respond.

The 35 watter I played was priced at $2500 which seemed a lot more feasible at that price range. When you have an amp like that, which provides a warm welcome to all kinds of overdrive/boost pedals, has an FX loop for all your fancy effects, and a very effective EQ, then you have to really consider it among the very top of your most coveted amps list.

As people have probably already pointed out, they are exquisitely designed and flawlessly built. I would buy one, gig without a backup and never worry about anything more than routine maintenance.

Their warranty is only 5 years like Marshall and Fender. Soldano is still king of warranties because they offer a lifetime warranty on their amps and do stand behind it. However, Two-Rock gives you the option of sending your amp to them for service to get certified used and you can pay $300 for an additional 3 year warranty which I guess is fair but I'd like to see them stand by a warranty like Soldano does.

Re: Two Rock and Tone King amps?

Bruce Zinky also has a lifetime transferable warranty on his amps like Soldano.
The Tone King was the one the I really liked it was a Blond Comet if I remember right in a 2/12 and the cleans were GLORIOUS it just had no real crunch channel and at over $2K was not what I needed. Both companies do well built and good sounding amps. I just prefer my stuff from Bruce for what I do.

Re: Two Rock and Tone King amps?

That looks like a great amp for small venue/studio work!

Have you gigged with it yet?

Not yet. It's brand new and just came in today. I didn't necessarily buy it to keep it so there's a good chance I'll sell it to fund a lower price amp head and new stratocaster.
