Okay, to go with the fingerboard poll, what kind a neck joint does everyone prefer.

Bolt-on?

Set (Glue in)?

Neck thru?

That's a hard one! Well, for me at least it is. :) I havent found any neck type that I didnt like. That being said I think the bolt-on is the most versatile.

I prefer a bolt-on because it is so much easier to replace the neck if you run into problems down the road, or just feel like changing something.

A neck through offers some strong theoretical advantages, especially with the longer necks of basses.

There are potential problems with set in necks - a glued joint doesn't seem that great to me - but there are lots of great guitars with set necks: PRS, Gibsons, etc. Actually, the PRS neck joint may be a "bolt in" instead of a "bolt on".

There's some interesting info on the Taylor site about how their neck joint works. Tons of contact area, attachment screws designed to provide for adjustment, etc.

I dig the sounds I get from all 3 joints.

But to me ... I prefer Bolt Ons for many reasons.

- Out of the 3, Neck Thru's feel 'not great' to my hands ... the hell area is not something I'm fond of. Set necks I like a little better but.

- I tend to be a little aggresive with my guitars, and in the case of a broken neck (rare), or a neck with manufacturing problems (not as rare) it's easier for me to replace it.

- I actually like the large heel that exists with a bolt on for some crazy reason.

I do think that there is some sustain that comes with a set neck. Not to say that all bolt ons don't have sustain, but they often don't have quite the sustain of the set neck. So yeah, I chose the set neck.

The bolt ons are a wonderful idea, but I'm still true to my Gibsons ;)

Thats like asking 'strat vs les paul' for me and while its very hard to pick, I like the neck through paul a little better.

I like the set neck due to the accessible heel. However, I've been playing with a Peavey Wolfgang and am quite impressed with the bolt on neck it has.

Neck Thru Or bolt on. Neck thrus for playability and the thick tone, bolt ons for the snappiness and quick articulate response.

Traditional Set-Neck construction kills tone IMO. I consider Bolt On Neutral, Set neck "dampened/ Muffled" due to the glue in the joint. Neck thrus also suffer from this, dampened highs, but since the glur joint is longer the effect is reduced. But the construction adds considerable low mids to the sound, which some like and others don´t.

That said, I use and enjoy all 3 ;)

BTW, a Gibson LP and most clones are Set-Necks, not Neck Thrus. Jackson and BC Rich are good examples of neck thrus ;)

Re: Type of neck joint ...

Depends on the guitar really. Couldn't have a les paul with a bolt-on - it'd destroy all the vibe!

I guess if you're into swapping necks though...

Re: Type of neck joint ...

They all have their ups and downs. I like the tone of the set neck guitars I've played a little better, though.

Re: Type of neck joint ...

What about the Set-thru?
I've read that is like a set-neck but the neck goes in the body about 12 inches. Is anyone familiar with the tone?
