you're right about the finish ... almost every one I've looked at is beautiful - it's a varnish finish (like a violin), with a lacquer top coat that's cut back almost to the varnish, so they are very lively

same Eastman - I hear the Joe Pisano model is pretty cool ... I played an oval hole archtop that sounded terrific - very responsive

and yes, I'm waiting for you to get that National mandolin together so we can jam on "Shady Grove"
