Ultimate Gilmour Si Fuzz?

I'm thinking of finding an ultimate Si Fuzz Face for Gilmouresque stuff. My favorite era is the Meddle through Wish You Were Here albums, meaning a silicon Fuzz Face. The ones I have in mind are:

Analogman BC108 Sun Face
Skreddy Lunar Module
FoxRox Hot Silicon

Distant 4th: Dunlop Hendrix Fuzz Face

I am 100% impressed with the NKT275 Ge Sun Face, it might possibly be my favorite Fuzz if not pedal right now, so Analogman gets a positive... I love all my Skreddys and he named a pedal after the Dark Side tone, gotta be good, right? I love everything else about the FoxRox CC2 except the current hybrid fuzz card, kind of like the worst of Si/Ge instead of the best of them. However I like the clips of the Hot Silicon card and standalone pedal... And of course the Hendrix FF is designed by Jorge Tripps of Way Huge fame*.

Has anyone used these pedals? Any opinions?

*Did you see he's reissuing the Swollen Pickle? My joy cannot be contained in one post!!! :D :D

Re: Ultimate Gilmour Si Fuzz?

I'd save a lot of money and go wiht the new Dunlop...the only other Fuzz I'd even look at if it were me is another AnalogMan. I also have an AM NKT275 and love it but the new Hendrix is tops for sure...it even got 2 thumbs up from Mike!

they released a new one? the old one was pretty lame sounding (maybe you could find a good one trying a few stores out...)

yeah, some time ago in fact...aqua blue Hendrix signature edition, handwired, designed by Jorge Tripps (from Way Huge) and uses some cool resisters, killer caps and some real nice BC-108 trannys...MUCH better than the junk Dunlop germanium FF and then some!

Re: Ultimate Gilmour Si Fuzz?

I don't own one but I've used one, and I have to recommend the Skreddy Lunar Module. I own two other Skreddys, and they're all gold :D

Re: Ultimate Gilmour Si Fuzz?

As far as si fuzz goes most any would work pretty well. Its tougher to get exact ge tones from a fuzz as those things tend to vary a bit more from one builder to the next but really any of the Si fuzz you listed would work and I dont think I could really put them in order.

The Foxrox Hot Silicon I had though was maybe a little brighter and more aggressive than you'd like that. Hot indeed, but not a bad sounding pedal by any means.

The Hendrix FF is certainly a sweet fuzz, little darker sounding which I like and it nails the BOG tone, which Jorge no doubt set out to do.

Haven't played an Analogman Si but his Ge stuff certainly sounds great and I dont think they have a "bad" pedal

Same goes with the Skreddy, I haven't had the Lunar Module but I certainly wouldnt expect it to suck based on the others I've had (top fuel, mayo)

The new Way Huge stuff does sound pretty cool, I've got a Swollen Pickle on order already. Who knows how it will be but for $150 instead of $800 on ebay I'll give it a shot

Re: Ultimate Gilmour Si Fuzz?

Just FYI and sort of unrelated, but the estimate arrival date I got for the new Way Huge products is Sept 19th

Also more FYI, music123 has 15% off on a single item so you can order one for $135 after the discount

Swollen Pickle for $135 instead of 700+ like they go for on ebay ? Thats exciting

Re: Ultimate Gilmour Si Fuzz?

no thought to the Big Muff? It's the first that comes to mind when Gilmour fuzz tone is mentioned. That gilmourish site has a ton on the big muff and his uses of various models of it.

Re: Ultimate Gilmour Si Fuzz?

I have the lil'Big Muff. It's a great pedal in its own right, I love mine, but it does the later Gilmour, 1978-present. The earler stuff is Fuzz Face.

The Big Muff is similar, but is thicker, more gain and less high end than a fuzz face. You can adjust a Big Muff to sound similar to a fuzz face.

To me the ultimate Gilmour tone is his earlier, fuzz face tones. I love Time and Money, One of These Days and Echoes. Also, I think I have the Muff thing covered. ;)

Re: Ultimate Gilmour Si Fuzz?

If you look at the Echoes DVD, Gilmour's using both the germanium Red fuzz face and the Silicone turquoise fuzz face, as well as a wah (looks like a VOX) and an Echo-Plex.

Also, Gilmour, before the 80's and EMG's, used low output Strat pickups, either stock Fender or later on Duncans. He used an MXR Dynacomp compressor which added a bit of sustain to the fuzz face and later big muff.

Keep in mind though that there were red si FF's as well so its really tough to judge them just based on looks.

I belive instead of a Echo-plex he used a Bionic Echo Platter, which used a device similar in principle to how a harddrive works rather than a tape loop.

I've never got my hands on one but from the Gilmour loving friends I know, its a big part of his sound and a few of them bought the line6 Echo Pro units simply because it had a model of that device

Re: Ultimate Gilmour Si Fuzz?

Binson Echorec actually. :) Same idea, it uses some sort of revolving hardware as opposed to a tape loop.
