Re: Ultimate SDUG Les Paul Poll!!!!!!

The JP gets my vote, however, IMO there should have been separate threads (one for solid colors, one for flametops, and one for plaintops.) as most people will pick a killer flametop over a solid color or plaintop anyday. The 59 LPs were and still are the holy grail LP for a reason.....

What is it ? Most people have never played one. They wern't that popular when new,Gibson stopped making them. Could be a myth. I'd love to get my hands on one though.

Voted for Surgeon's WR Custom. That is just one sexy guitar. I've seen so many bursts and flames that I'm numb to them anymore.

Bursts ('58-'60 LP Stds) have aged well, both wood and PU's. Their tone's changed over the decades, and that's also helped by the design of thick mahogany and a maple cap, and a short rigid single-cutaway neck. And a pair of PAF's, the "holy grail of PU's" doesn't hurt the tone either. The sum is greater than the parts. They're far more valuable than any other production guitar, on a par with original V's (extremely rare), excepting of course, guitars belonging to someone famous. If I remember correctly (from a blue book of guitar values), several years ago Bursts were about 8 to 10 times more valuable to collectors than 1950's Strats and Teles.

Having Page, Green, Clapton, Richards, Bloomfield, etc playing Bursts was pretty good marketing for Bursts and the LP mystique too.

Robert and Scott can still play in the best flame category. As can Jolley's quilt.
