Re: ULTIMATE SDUG Semi-final round #2

Old Dear is God.

If it wasn't for that one, I would of had a hard time deciding between the purple beast and that acoustic.

Re: ULTIMATE SDUG Semi-final round #2

Don't count Lucid out. He's a marketing machine.

Still, Old is, well, you see it.

Re: ULTIMATE SDUG Semi-final round #2

I'm a Gibson man, so, Lucid's got my vote! I'd LOVE to have a chance to play Old Dear, though. What a great guitar!

Re: ULTIMATE SDUG Semi-final round #2

I'm not a Strat guy by any means, but that Blue Deluxe is a thing of beauty.

It is and it's one I'd want to buy myself, however... this time round, old dear gets the nod - what a piece of history that represents.

Re: ULTIMATE SDUG Semi-final round #2

I vote for the Aqua Les Paul, but I think the Old Dear stands a chance with the way people speak of it around here!

Re: ULTIMATE SDUG Semi-final round #2

The old dear gets my vote. Lucid's LP was considered, but the tuning keys killed it. However, the strat would've always gotten the vote because not only do I love strats.... I love beat to hell old strats.

Re: ULTIMATE SDUG Semi-final round #2

My favourite guitars are Les Pauls and superstrats and there are some crackers here. I do not like strats much at all.

Yet even I had to vote for that Old Dear, its just amazing.

Re: ULTIMATE SDUG Semi-final round #2

Has anyone got a link to a post that explains the specifics of the Old Dear? Obviously a CBS Stratocaster of some sort, right?

Here's one: https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=115355

She's been the topic of a lot of discussion so there are more!

She's a '68 and she's lived with Geoff since '81. Original pickups were replaced with Duncan SSL1s / SSL5 - and possibly again with some pickups Seymour wound specially?

I'm sure if Geoff (wahwah) sees this he will give you the lowdown.

Re: ULTIMATE SDUG Semi-final round #2

Thanks, Simon. That thread answered all my questions.

4,000+ gigs! Wow. I have played under 500 in my life, and mostly on basses with poly finishes. No way any of my guitars will ever look that cool!

As for the comments in that thread about the rosewood wearing down, yes, it does wear away. Even my '03 Melody Maker is starting to get a little scalloped on the edges of the fretboard. I played a 2007 "new" Explorer a few weeks ago. it has been a floor model since new; the Guitar Center has never sold it. It had MAJOR wear in the same way. Really rounded over edges on the fretboard. That is one of the reasons why higher trim levels have binding. My '68 SG Std. Has big dents that would probably be starting to show through if it was a veneer-fretboard Strat.

Old dear can have no competition, regardless of looks, specs, likes and dislikes the thing has mojo that transcends all that...
