Ultimate tube amp.....what do you want?

Re: Ultimate tube amp.....what do you want?

Hmm...

One channel, one volume, one gain, bass, middle and treble controls. I think that sums it up. Nice dynamics and tone options. What else can you hope for? Can you make one for me?

Re: Ultimate tube amp.....what do you want?

id like a 50 watt 2x12 combo......2 channels, clean and another clean.........the one clean would sound like fender, and the other clean would sound like plexi clean (maybe 4 output tubes split up, like 2 6l6s to the one channel, and 2 el34s to the other?)....... then there would also be a great sounding fuzz circuit built in (with 2 or 3 controls), which could be switched on at any time, on either channel. As well as a classic sounding tube driven reverb

so it could be kind of a hendrix/clapton combo type thing goin on...... i think alot of people would dig an amp like this, considering the tones are very sought after........and having a built in fuzz circuit is very cool and unique (as i have not seen it myself)

Both sound damn excellent to me!

I'm looking hard at keeping my 1987x and having it modded by Splawn or Voodoo..with my Mesa on the fritz, I'm really wishing I had another good amp to use right now.

Jeff,
Dude have you heard the Splawn modded 1987x? It sounds fantastic. You can't go wrong.

Just the clips on the website. Does sound really nice...as does the Voodoo.

The cool thing about Voodoo is that you can make an appt, and they will "mod while you wait" to your tastes... they are a few hours drive from me..plus no shipping charges (just tax).

I disagree, if its a good sounding amp it will sound good at any volume. check out this clip of the Splawn on half power at at an extremly low volume. So low in fact I used a 57 into my mixer and had to dime the mic input level just to get a signal. I did it late at night when the wife was sleeping in the next room. Seriously. Not my best playing, but the amp sounds killer.

That clip reminds me of vocal project-era Greg Howe, though the tone is more like his first album. Nice.

I'd go four channels, four power sections.

Preamps: all totally separate, one tweed, one blackface, one vox/matchless, one plexi.

Power sections: 6l6, 6v6, el84, and el34.

-You would be able to mix and match power sections to preamps for lots of tonal variation

Reverb will be from an exact replica of a fender outboard unit.

Trem from my vibrolux.

all extras will be completely omitted from the signal path when not in use.

30-60 watts depending on configuration.

WOW, really? Thats a huge compliment. Greg Howe is one of my all-time favorite players. I purposely tried to hold back on the shred for that clip, so I'm surprised you were able to pick up on that influence.

Re: Ultimate tube amp.....what do you want?

I want what alot of folks want.....a Marshallesque and Fenderesque amp in one. So.....

50 watt 2 channel amp (head) with seperate eq, pre and post gain for each channel. Clean channel should have reverb, and presence should apply to both channels. Channels are footswitchable (obviously) with a boost function so the amp can be pushed harder during solos on either channel (without altering the initial tone).

Amp should take either EL34's or 6L6's. Bias prong should be on the back of the amp, along with bias dial (like the Marshall DSL50). Amp should be able to push two seperate cabinets, with choice of 4, 8 or 16 ohm. Effects loop that you should be able to control the effects level with.

Clean channel should have sufficient headroom to maintain crystal cleans while jamming with band.....but should be able to get that funky SRV tone when the pre gain is dialed in higher. The Dirty channel should go from JCM 800 gain all the way to Soldano Hot Rod gain.

That's it....a simple rockin' amp. If you are actually able to build this, let me know now as I'm shopping for this exact amp. It's gonna be either you or Voodoo that delivers my dream amp.

Peace.

Re: Ultimate tube amp.....what do you want?

So far from what I read in in this thread ,The genaral idea seems to be..
1) Simple
2) BF Fender Cleans
3) Plexi style crunch
4) Solodano style lead channel
5) FX Loop
6) 4,8,16 load selector
7) Simple...Opps, I already said that?
I think that Simple is the wild card in building a jack of all trades amp. IMHO
too many knobs, too many options make me crazy (i.e. a Mesa treadplate) No
doubt a great amp! But far from simple. Other Idea would be to expand on
Seymours original Idea of modual amps. Or make it easy to modify to your
own specs. So a basic amp with a bunch of easy D.I.Y. kits. just my 2 cents :)
One more Idea... How about a switch to discharge the filter Caps? People
with minamal electronics knowledge shouldn't be poking around inside a
amp!! But it would be a cool saftey feature for the aveage D.I.Yer. For a
tech this is a No brainer,But if you don't work around electronics all day
This is a scary thing. :saeek:

I am extremely happy with my RM4, and I am planning on purchasing another. It sounds very close to the originals, plus it can be modded very easily to get a unique sound of your own liking. Which is what I like! (Thanks to Bruce Egnater and his crew for the mods. They do great work!) As far as power amps go, the RT2 sounds just as good as my VHT. The VHT sound a little different, not better or worse. Just different, and I plan on having the same biasing feature as my RT2 put onto the VHT.

What do I need?
Low noise
Good tone
Versatility
Easy modifications
Series and Parallel effects loops with tube buffering and front panel control
A pre-loop out
Easy channel switching control
Self biasing
Separate tone controls
Separate volume controls
Full midi support
Easy access to tubes

Re: Ultimate tube amp.....what do you want?

Wow guys, I am amazed at what a diverse gang of players we have here....and also how many of you have "exact" idea's....how cool is that!!

Since I also play all the time, "practicality" is a must, as is reliability..(even my gear waits until gig-time to break down... :blackeye: ). It's looking like a "individualized" approach is going to make the most sense. Even my rig is exclusively setup for me and my style and does things no other setup will do....(like actually switching PU's and coil taps automatically if desired)
and although it works great for me, it obviously wouldn't fit many other's needs.

Anyway, It's still going be a little while before I will be in a position to really offer this, and I really didn't want this to seem like an "advertisement" for myself or anything like that, so this is the last I will say about it.....other than the fact that ya'll rock!!!!!!!!

Feel free to post more ideas...though... :)

I have a few ideas myself. One thing I hate is amps that are 50w and higher.

Well it depends on how well the amp reacts to volume. I can take my bandmaster to 8 and still not be over bearing when jamming in my buddy's car port with the band. its 40 watts. just smooth power tube distortion, but w/ mesa tubes. Are those any good for fenders? I might try the TAD 5881s like scott_f suggested.

Well I for one am interesting to see Seal Amplification come into fruition. After hearing your work and seeing what you can do you've got my attention.

It's mostly the phrasing, though there are a couple of quicker lines that definitely remind me of GH, particularly some stuff that sounds like those rolling barre lines he does across two strings.

I'm a huge Greg Howe fan myself, spent a lot of time learning his stuff back in the day.

guilty as charged,,LOL. I changed it though where I actually skip a string every other cycle. across 3 and 4 strings.
