Under $400 tube combo, hidden treasures?

I'm looking for:
A tube combo
Under $400
Hopefully 2x12
With lots of clean headroom.

So, that means I'm looking used essentially, yes?

I'm hunting down some Traynor YCV-40's and Bugera V55's (and 22's). A used Fender 2x12 is hopefully a possibility in this economy, but we'll see. I might check out a crate or peavey tube combo, as they're usually well within my price range.

What other sorts of gems in this range should I keep an eye out for?

Check out the Jet City 20watt amps, comes in both a combo and a head.

Dude, I just traded my Blackheart for a mid-90's Fender Hot Rod DeVille 212, and jeezus, it is a big, clean, warm, full, bad-ass from the ground up amp.

The trade value price was about $400.

These, and the Hot Rod Deluxes are EVERYWHERE for sale used, as they are "the number one selling tube amp in history."

I was gonna suggest the Deville as well, if you can find it in your price rance. The Deluxe is decent but the Deville slays it for band applications, in my experience.

The Traynor amps in that range are also very nice. Similar to the Hot Rod series, but perhaps a touch darker and slightly muffled (in stock form).

You can pick up used Ampeg Super Jets for under 400...they're loud little buggers.

Fender Super 60, red knob Twin, and the Super 112 are super loud on the cleans.

I've got an old Crate Vintage Club 30. Now i can't say the same for all of Crates amps, but I know mine is a pearl. It's from the mid 90's, 112 30w combo. I liked the new Palomino Amps they came out with years ago, I think they were recreations of the Vintage Club series. Those can be had in your price range easily on ebay.

VC30 is a great amp

The YCV 40 is an awesome amp, I had one for a number of years. Great clean, nice overdrive, you'll need a boost or pedal to get a heavy drive, the overdrive is quite loose but it sounds nice. I don't see these too often but there's a yamaha mike soldano designed amp, comes in a 50 watt combo I believe, and I've seen them for 4 - 500 used, another awesome amp

I really want a peavey vtm120 with a 212 cab; you could get that for around your price

Re: Under $400 tube combo, hidden treasures?

Pignose G40V.

good call dude, i played through one of those once and it blew me away. No Clean channel, and I'm not sure how clean the single channel gets, but the crunch on that thing was great. Helluva loud too for a little amp.

Hmm, while the pignoise may be nice for some guys, does anyone have any other reccomendations for things with exceptional clean headroom? I'd like the ability to play clean even at loud volumes, then kick my OD on and let it break up the amp that way.
