Under Construction -- Amp Pics

Under construction. I just popped the chassis in and stuck the baffle board in there. I've got several clear finishing coats tomorrow. Thought I'd see how it looked.

Drilling those mounting holes made me very nervous. Screw that up, the chassis is toast. Or I'd have had to come up with Fenderish "chassis straps". Ugh!

One pic with flash, one without. The flash makes the maroon/oxblood faceplate look plum. It's actually rather dark.

P.S. Front face piece of wood is maple or something, took to the stain in darker way, has some wicked grain going on there (that's not a crappy staining job, it's the wood). This thing looks much better in person.

Final pics in a day or so.

And, with a little help from the paint program, someone requested a green faceplate....

Those are some nice looking cuts of wood you've got there! Are you going to do the finger-jointing on them in the future?

But I have to ask...and this more of a general question....

I love the idea of wood-grain amps. But as someone who owns and gigs amps and babys them....I still find that it's near impossible to NOT get a ding in the tolex now and again. Dealing with this is fine....it's tolex...it's meant to get hammered now and again.

But for something with the sheen and quality and beauty of the wood like you have there....are these amps to be played and gigged with? What's the demographic you're finding of people spending money on amps like this that just seem more prone to damage.

Again...gorgeous looking cut of wood. You're inspiring me to turn the slab of wood I have downstairs into a humidor.

I think the cab looks fantastic. But the faceplate, I'm not sure of. The plate and the color of the stain almost seem too closely related (of the same family) but are like distant cousins. It's like mixing orange with red-orange.

But hey, that's just one guy's opinion. Could very well be the lighting in the picture, anyway.

I'm going to put some Poly on it tomorrow and try to give it some enhanced protection. I've also got some black metal corner protectors that will go on the bottom. I could put them on the top as well, but I'm thinking that'd look kinda dumb.

I will also be offering traditional tolex. I have a tolex head on the way.

I really do not know if I will sell even one of these! So, the first one was done for me. I like the wood, I don't gig. I wanted something that looked as beautiful as it sounds.

yeah, I hear you. Constructive criticism is most helpful when you're just getting up and rolling.

I'm going to have the guy cut me out some other color faceplates for me. Maybe a traditional looking black one, gold one? Maybe a dark forest green one? They are not overly expensive.

The flash pic makes it look way plum colored. It's really a blood / maroon color and in person it seems to work pretty well. When I finish up, I'll have to make sure my pics are accurate instead of taking a rush shot in the shop. I'm thinking the black is a no brainer. Dark green would look pretty bitchin' as well. And, in person, the maroon looks pretty good.

That looks great, Scott! I can see what you mean about the uneven finishing you mentioned in the other thread, but I think it looks better that way, than it would if it was perfect all around. Gives it more of a real, hand finished vibe, than a run of the mill amp.

The tolex will look pretty standard on the next one. This one was for me. I learned a lot about staining on this one. If I do another wood one, I'll probably just pay my wood working guy to do the staining. He's a pro, I'm not. I do love that contrasting piece of wood that is on the face. I think it's maple. It took to the stain in a rather awesome, dark way. It's got some wicked grain running across it.

Considering your knowledge of amps and good tone I have little doubt that if it sounds good to you then you're likely to extremely well for yourself.

oh well, paint is all I have....

the maroon will look good on the black head that's coming. It actually doesn't look bad in person here, but that flash washed out all the darkness in the one pic. Made that maroon look purple. It's more of a blood color.

Hey man, you wanted green, I give you green!

I was going to have a green one made first, but they were out of that material. I'll do a side by side comparison and see which one looks the best for when I take some formal pics for the webpage.

Damn, that's beautiful work Scott, now it looks as good as I'm sure it sounds. I wanted to see how it'd look with the dark green faceplate so I busted out some photoshop....incidentally, I also got ambitious and removed the excess piping.
