understanding speaker use, output, and changes?

I have a 2x12 marshall cab and a 100 watt marshall amp. Each speaker is rated at 75 watts, so a total of 150 watts. I was wondering if I changed my speakers to greenbacks at 25w what would happen? If I did that the total output would be 50w, so my amp would output 100 watts through only 50 watt total output Would playing my marshall through those blow my speakers if I had them changed to the greenbacks?

Maybe we could add this to the vault to help people understand about speakers.

Your volume control is, in essence, a "power" control. The speakers will only blow if you drive the volume up to greater than 50 watts. (Which would be real loud.)

It probably wouldn't be a great idea, but you could do it as long as you were careful.

+1.... As long as yo´re running your amp at about 5-6 max it shouldn´t be a problem , but isn´t the best idea... It´s essentially asking for someone to come by and crank the volume, whick would blow both speakers and if it´s a tube amp they might buy the Output tranny a free cruise as well

I really don't recommend that you use only 2 greenbacks with a 100 watt head-
They are only rated for 25 watts each, meaning the total amount of power you should put into it is 50 watts- If for some reason you turn your amp up loud, you most surely will blow them. They are made for lower wattage amps, or, for use in a 4x12 cab, which would be able to handle a 100 watt head.
100 watts divided by 4 =25 watts each speaker

As a thought, maybe you could look into the new Emminence line of speakers, I think they have one that sounds like a greenback, but can take more power.

Identical or more... In other wirds, to keep this setup (100w Head, 2x12 cabinet) you´d want 2x >50W speakers
