Underwound strat pickups?

So I'm looking for a set of vintage style underwound pickups for my strat, and I was gonna go with Don Mare pickups because he makes a really great underwound single coil, but they are quite expensive and take a while to wind. I was wondering if Seymour Duncan does a set of underwound alnico Vs in the 5- low 6k range. I've tried SSL-1s and SSL-2s in two different strats, but I just need something mellower and cleaner for those John Mayer tones. Unfortunately the antiquity pickups seem a bit too hot, or I would go with them.

So is it possible to get a set of underwound antiquities or SSL-1s without having to place an order with the custom shop? I love Duncans, but I don't want to spend over $300 just for a set of low output strat pickups.

In addition to the fine recommendations above, I would suggest contacting member 1972firebirdguy about a low wind set. I'm still smitten, blown away, more than happy. et al with a tele pickup he custom wound for me. We discussed a low output strat set a while back, so if he's willing to wind you a set, do it!

In addition to Mare, two immediately available options...

Lollar Blonde & Tweed
Seymour Duncan CS "Scooped" Link

Is he a Seymour Duncan guy or does he just do his own pickup thing?

If you like spanky underwound tones, you will love Fender Custom Shop 69.

I have a set of Lindy Fralin's Woodstock 69s; they're low wind and just magical. Great pickups.
I don't know the specs on the (relatively new) Duncan Hendrix set, but I bet they're wound pretty light too.

Re: Underwound strat pickups?

For underwound, I always went with Lindy Fralin. Vintage Hots underwound 5 or 10%.

But they won't be cheap.

I got tired of the weaker Strat pickup sound though.

These days I use either Duncan Surfers or regular Fralin Vintage Hots.

Or for friends on a budget, the Duncan SSL-1. It's half as much as the Surfer and sounds almost the same.

Re: Underwound strat pickups?

Lindy will make what you want. He usually is pretty friendly and knows what you want. Fralin Pickups are bright by design.
