Unexpected NGD CHEAP!

Out talking to friends in the Pawn business about a job and found this thing. Buddy owns the shop an was frustrated someone had taken this one so threw me a give away $ to get it out of the shop. One of those got limited $ but can't leave that one on the table things so--. Guitar is an absolute fantastic player but is a mess electronically. When I got it the volume pot was broken and taped up full on but surprisingly plugged it up and although the volume was full on and the jack nasty the guitar actually worked!! Whoever was in it had no idea how to solder as every joint was a cold one and blobby as heck but still it sounded pretty good. Neck is an old MIJ RG 570 neck from the late 80's or early 90's and the frets are perfect body is Iby and I suspect this may be a USA custom body as the neckplate shows. I have it semi apart now and will pull her all the way down in a few. Pickups are Duncan don't know what is in the bridge yet and has a hot rail in the neck. Have pots on hand and thinking of dropping the Tele GFS Alnico single I have in the neck with the Alt 8. GFS is a standard wind 6.6 K Alnico 5 so if I split the Alt with it should make for a good clean sound and at around 8.5K split should balance well with that tele neck + give me that ripping Alt tone I love in the bridge when full on. Needed a distraction badly from all this BS so thankful to get this thing to have something to keep me occupied. Need to see exactly what is in the bridge before i make the final cut but pretty much a given that GFS will go in the neck. Came with a push pull Tone pot so after I unsolder everything and clean it up will use that to split the bridge bucker and then use the 3 way and jack that was in it. Trem is an old Iby Edge in really great shape so set there. Here is the monster.

Re: Unexpected NGD CHEAP!

Pickups are a JB trembucker Bridge and the Hot Rails neck. Kinda leaning now towards keeping them as they are nixing the tone control and just throwing in a master tap switch the 3 way and master volume. Building it out as a straight up hard rock to metal guitar.
Haven't set it stone yet as wavering between leaving the JB or swapping it for that Alt8 I have loose but now thinking I will leave that hot rails in the neck. Taking a break for a while today on it to work on Christmas music for in the morning and Monday night so likely won't get it back togher till after Christmas. PS probably going to do some on line stuff for the guy who sold it to me after the 1 st of the year so--.

Re: Unexpected NGD CHEAP!

This guitar now has my full attention!!
First the not so good. Everything in the cavity was fried big time and I am amazed the thing worked at all when I got it!! Volume pot was broken shaft totally gone was taped up some how wide open in a ball of black tape in the cavity every solder joint was gloppy and blobbed like crazy. Guy must have tried to use a bad iron or some thing as he burned everything to a crisp but never got enough heat to get a solid solder joint anywhere. Switch and tone pot are toast so have parts ordered. For the short I direct wired the JB to the 500K pot I had then direct wired it to the jack just so I could set the guitar up and get it playing to see what I really have.
Gets better here. Tuners were black Ghotos but upside down so were ether left handed or from a guitar with a reverse headstock so replaced them with a set of Washburn labeled but period correct Chrome Ghotos from my parts box that fit like a glove. Went through everything polished the frets cleaned it all up set the trem up and strung her. Every thing dropped back in easy and she set up quick took a set tune wise really quickly and is rock stable even using the trem liberally tuning it with a Snark [wish they all came together like this!]. Then I set the intonation with a real tuner and plugged her in. If I had not physically pulled this pickup and looked at the label I would have never believed this thing had a JB!! Not that JB's don't work well in a Super strat they do and I have several but this thing sounds ABSOLUTELY HUGE and is so harmonically complex that its not like any JB tones I have had before!! Makes me REALLY glad I left the JB alone and didn't drop that Alt8 I have on hand in this one!!
Planned to just flip this thing quick but rethinking it for sure as think this may be a keeper! Just spent a few hours playing the heck out of this thing through my Boogie DC -5 which absolutely loves that guitar and the tones are just jaw dropping with the combo. Been a long time since I have had one like this thing as it as a whole is definitely more than the raw sum of the parts. Good list of parts though in a MIJ Wizard neck from a late 80's RG 570 and the frets are near perfect, the late 80's edge trem is also in really good shape. I am convinced this body is one of the USA Custom Ibanez bodies from that same era and it has the USA neck plate.
Will get some photos up a little later but what an unexpected true diamond in the rough this thing has turned out to be!!

Re: Unexpected NGD CHEAP!

Congrats on cheap and sweet find. Loved the neck on 570 I had that was stolen. Distortion in the bridge and begged to be tuned 1/2 step down. Screamed through my Marshall.

Re: Unexpected NGD CHEAP!

Makes you wonder how a guitar can get that messed up, and that the previous owner was so incompetent with electronics that he just scrapped the whole thing rather than fix it.

See it all the time in the Pawn shops man. I have bought so many cheap that were screwed up by folk who pawned them for nothing.
The SN 08 first year Washburn USA MG 104 I have for example. Guitar was a mess bowed neck all out of whack on the trem but intact. Paid $ !60 for it OTD and rescued it. Has become a fantastic player for me and find even a beat example of one of these for under $500 now!!
My Carvin DC 400 some idiot had taken the floyd apart and had it way out of intonation then used a piece of counter top material to block the Floyd he glued to the block!! Bought her for almost nothing after it had sat in a Pawn shop for over a year because it was unplayable. Now a great player almost mint guitar once i got it all set back up and cleaned up. Just got to find um but they are out there!
This is the Rescue 2002 DC 400 Mahogany neck and body Quilt top and head stock Floyd guitar that was over $2K new .

The one that still baffles me was the 2004 Gibson Historic R8 we had. Guy lost it 0ver a $300 pawn. When I found it in one of our shops in the back room it was filthy and had 4 strings on it. Guy also had paid a shop $ 300 to "relic it". So what was a $4K guitar was turned in to a guitar that was worth about 1/2 of that then lost on a small pawn!! I cleaned it up set it up and sold it for $2500. Did that with over $20K in guitars over the last year and 1/2 for that owner then he fired me for taking a stand on a local political issue here on talk radio and as of now has denied my unemployment. I am currently fighting him over it with the State.
You would be amazed what you see in BS around Pawn shops!!
Almost wound up with a shot at a real MK II C+ combo in a exotic wood cab but I could not pull it to sell without calling the owner and he came and got it. Had a serious health issue and had lost track of it!! Still talk to the guy and he is livid over what they did to me.

Re: Unexpected NGD CHEAP!

Awesome looking guitar and glad you have a little payback for all the crap you’ve had, play it in good health.

Re: Unexpected NGD CHEAP!

Sorry to hear you are still fighting Da Man Bro!! Disgraceful.. But, glad to see you got a good score! Wonder if that is factory paint? The black binding or edge stripe looks killer!
Much of my soldering work is "Blobby" cuz my old iron was too light duty. Plus I was always afraid it would come undone so I went overkill... I recently got a new one that works much better and my skills have improved.. haha

Anyhow, best wishes for a positive resolution to your sitch, congrats on another awesome score!

Re: Unexpected NGD CHEAP!

Your RG570 neck is a 1991 (F1 serial)
If that's an original 1991 USA Custom it most likely had a graphic on it under that Yellow paint. The USA-CS were made in 1990-91 only or maybe it was 91-92 only (cant remember but they were short lived and highly coveted)

It could however be an RG565 which were also an H/S configuration and also made in 1991... (not going by your neck's serial here, just saying)

Nice score and it should make a nice player when youre done.

Thanks on the date code on the neck knew close to when but didn't know those codes. Worked for an Ibanez Dealer 88 -early 90 so was close on the guess. This body is a little different and really does look like a USA it's an interesting guitar that's for sure. New correct trem bar and the wiring parts arrived by mail today so will get it all together in a day or so and get some photos up.
I popped the bar in and played the living heck out of it for a while today and this thing is rock solid on tuning stability has a very even response across the neck plays great + that JB really does sound amazing in the bridge of this particular guitar. Actually sounds a LOT like my KOA DC 127 with the Hybrid in the bridge when you roll the volume back just a touch on this one. The JB can be fickle about what guitar it's in but when the combo is right they are just magic and this one is right! Hope it doesn't change to much when I get finished with it and have the full harness and switch in the signal path.

That’s a way cool find. Looks like a quality built Mutt!

Re: Unexpected NGD CHEAP!

I have a question about this guitar.
All of the 570 models I have looked at on eBay and reverb all have a HSH setup, but this is an HS setup.
Is this a 570 neck on a different model body?
If so, what model body is this?
OR...was this body altered to have the middle and neck pickup filled and the neck re-routed for a single?
I ask because I love the HS setup and I have been doing a little window shopping for some superstrats lately and I’d like to know what model had the HS setup.
Thanks.

Re: Unexpected NGD CHEAP!

Damn i would have bought that thing in a heartbeat! Electronics are easy to fix, especially in a mutt, its structural issues that really are to look out for. Nice find and a pinch jealous!
