Unexpected pedal crush....Boss BD.2

Not sure how I closed my MXR Prime Distortion thread, but I ended up taking it back and trading it in for a used Boss Blues Driver. I tried it through a Blues Jr. at GC, and it soumded so good. My Sunn Beta Lead is far from a Blues Jr., but I figured I'd give it a shot this Thursday night.

So I get home, and I put in front of my Or-15 for kicks. As any Orange users are well aware, these amps are finicky when it comes to drive/distortion pedals. But DANG! This pedal sounds so good with this amp. No loss of any harmonic juiciness at all. I played this pedal for most the night. Through clean, and as a boost. I'm really liking it as a boost. I've been playing this amp with the gain just at 11:00 lately for classic-ish rock tones. Boss settings, L-12:30, T-11:00 and G-9:30. So I think this pedal is a keeper, whether it works with my Sunn or not.

Re: Unexpected pedal crush....Boss BD.2

I really like Boss products. I haven't tried a Blues Driver but I've heard great things about them.

Congrats and enjoy!

Re: Unexpected pedal crush....Boss BD.2

I have a modded BD-2 from years ago. Nice little pedal.

Re: Unexpected pedal crush....Boss BD.2

Buy another one and have it modified to Keeley specs. Adds a bit of fat, mids and loses some of the harshness; becomes an even better boost while still remaining a bright unit.
A smooth creamy OD it's not.

I really like mine in front of my Tweaker which is a dark sounding amplifier, in order to add tightness and harmonics to rhythm sounds. In front of a bright amp I imagine it would be harsh.

Re: Unexpected pedal crush....Boss BD.2

Who's doing the Keeley mods now? Didn't he stop? I'm pretty solder savvy, so maybe I can do something.

Truth be told, I didn't notice any harshness. The Orange isn't a bright amp to begin with. Plus I've been playing through a 1x15 Eminence Big Ben lately, which is even darker (eq'd to compensate for that). I did play through my 2x12 as well last night, and it still didn't seem harsh.

Re: Unexpected pedal crush....Boss BD.2

The BD-2 is by far my fav Boss driver pedal.

I believe it is also Boss's gain pedal with the most amount of volume boost, to date.

Re: Unexpected pedal crush....Boss BD.2

I have a Keeley-modified BD-2 as well, a mainstay on my pedalboard...

Sadly, I think that he stopped doing mods a few years ago. Just original pedals now.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I do see one for sale every once I'm a while on CL.

Know what the Waza(?) mod is all about? Send your pedal to have done? Or a pedal they sell? It may be something I'd like to have done for the Beta Lead if this pedal seems a little shrill with it.

Re: Unexpected pedal crush....Boss BD.2

I'm old enough, crazy enough, and own a few soldering irons. All I need are schematics, materials, and pedals.
Got an old Boss CS-3. Heard that there's a mod for that one. Might start there.

The Waza is a production pedal that Boss does up. It has a switch for modern and classic on it amd it basically sounds closer to the Keeley mod BD2 than stock. Nice pedal but not enough for me to justify the extra expense

Re: Unexpected pedal crush....Boss BD.2

I have no idea honestly. I bought the BD-2 because someone was selling it cheap and I didn't see many of them in my circle of live music peeps.

Re: Unexpected pedal crush....Boss BD.2

I think Analogman is still doing BD2 mods. Keeley isn't.

Re: Unexpected pedal crush....Boss BD.2

Yeah, I'm digging the crap out of this pedal. Of course I always knew it was out there. I just never had a chance, or taken the opportunity to mess with one.

Late to the game, this one.

Re: Unexpected pedal crush....Boss BD.2

I did the Monte Allums mod on mine. Killer little pedal. A definite "keeper".
