Unhappy with my current dirty tone...Please help.

Re: Unhappy with my current dirty tone...Please help.

I'm sure someone's gonna kill me by saying this, but...

... dump the boogie.

:eyecrazy:

Just kidding. kinda. I've always thought marshally type amps cut better through a mix. Something with the mids. My Bogner Shiva cutz like MAD, never gets lost.

Why dont you get some AII and AV magnets and swap them out of your custom, and try that first. Cheap alternative.

I'm going to half agree with this. I have a Mesa F30 ( I like smaller amps & mic if nec. ) I had to take mine to King Amplification to get the thing "cleaned up" because the gain fn's on either channel just turned it into pure mush : dark, muddy & no definition. With a little cleanup I think it's one of the best rock amps out there, though you guys'd probably go bigger Watts.

For pickups you rock gain freaks will find more clarity in Alnico V or ceramics, though for my money, a tuber & a Pearly Gates will do it every time.

Hey Mike, I'm surprised that no one has said this yet, and perhaps thats because I'm way off base - and keep in mind, I'm strictly a bedroom wanker - but whenever I turn on any kind of distortion, my tone knob goes to "zero". The reason for this is that all forms of distortion do so by clipping the signal. Clipping generates its own high-order harmonics. Thats the sound we want to hear. By rolling off the highs, I'm allowing the distortion to create the high-end content. If you leave the highs on, then those two are fighting each other for space.

If you haven't already . . . try it. ;)

Hmm nice post artiee... I should try that out today.. I hardly use a distortion box. But off and on do use it..

Re: Unhappy with my current dirty tone...Please help.

I never did either until I discovered that "trick". I use it often now. Nice creamy "blues" tone, even with my Spina-fied DS-1. :)

Re: Unhappy with my current dirty tone...Please help.

I like the PATB suggestions but I think this calls for a Jazz bridge. Sounds great under gain, will clean much better than the high output pickups and will still be clear and cut through well.

The tone on your guitar? That just doesnt seem like it would work out well. Or do you mean on the pedal? All the way to zero ? I've got to try this tonight I guess :)

Yup. On the guitar. I use .022uf caps, so I'm not taking out as much high-end as if you used .047s. Sometimes I'll roll the tone up to 1 or 2. But usually, on zero. Gets a killer "woman tone" too.

Re: Unhappy with my current dirty tone...Please help.

The PATB-1 sounds very interesting. Are those only available in trembucker spacing? The bridge on my tele is spaced for a humbucker only.

Thanks again everyone there are some good ideas here. With all this I'm sure I can find something that suits me.

Re: Unhappy with my current dirty tone...Please help.

:friday:Maybe you could try & fiddle new capacitor from Hovland or Jensen , they work wonders for my Taco-Strat with Lil '59(Neck), PG (bridge) for Strat & Staggered AlnicoII pro in mid position ;Enjoy the fiddling !!!
