Unhappy with my rig

Re: Unhappy with my rig

Sell your stuff and go back to Start.

:P

You'll get tired of that SD-1 soon too. Trust me. Each time I grab a BOSS type of effect, it takes a few weeks/months before I start grumbling about that damn tone-sucker bypass.

Re: Unhappy with my rig

Also, I cant stand cabs with different speakers anymore... exactly the same problem as you stated. the tip is :

KEEP IT SIMPLE AND BASIC.

Re: Unhappy with my rig

Anyone wanna buy a G12h30?

I fiddle with those switches a bit too, at the moment their set to:
Vacume Tubes and Spongy...

I've also been doing something new with the dual Rectifier amps called integrated quads. These quads consist of hand picked 6L6GC's and E34L's that all draw the same exact amount of natural plate current which is how tubes are matched. In an amp that has between 470 and 500 plate volts which is what the Mesa Dual Rec's have. These quads can be biased at 36 to 44mA just as you would with a quad of 6L6's or E34L's or in the case of the Dual Rec's these quads can be run with the amp set in the EL34 position. The integrated quads do provide a very cool mixture of tones combining the deep thump and clean smooth highs of the JJ 6L6GC's and the aggressive punch and classic British sound of the JJ E34L's.

Dump the recto.

Negative!

It seems like you are somewhat happy with the recto sound, you just want a little extra. Why not have Trace mod it at Voodoo. There is plenty of stuff he can do. You know, make it sound the way you want it to. :bigthumb:

Just a thought.

Re: Unhappy with my rig

Positive!

-life's too short to disappear in the mix. I've heard voodoo modded rectos and they still sound like background noise when paired live with a marshall or 5150/soldano type amp. Once a recto, always a recto.

The only recto user in that list of players you like is Petrucci, and he uses a road king, which is a different can of beans. To be honest, the only player in that list with a really consistently great sound is Yngwie, and he uses old marshalls.

Pffft, New Zealanders and their advice :laugh2:

Petrucci uses a Road King and a recto, not just road kings.

I don't think your problem is so much the gear. I had similar burnout issues when I got obsessed with equipment and what I just "had" to have. Aim for smaller practice sessions if it helps. The best thing you can do is just relax and concentrate on playing as oppposed to the perfect rig. I know, easier said than done, but trust me, I've been in the same situation. If need be, unplug the guitar and do all your practice that way :laugh2:

Incidently, you'll find some good tips/articles on burnout/practice routines, etc, here

I agree on ditching the Recto, but again that's just personal taste. I don't much like buzzsaw preamp gain, that's why I traded mine for a VHT Pitbull.

As for the speaker issue when micing, just mic a bit farther in front of your cab between the two speakers. The V30 and G12H30 complement each other's weaknesses VERY well to produce a very full, balanced sound. There is a reason that setup is so popular.

That's great, but Bob is talking about E34L tubes in that article, which are NOT the same as EL34s! I wouldn't run a mix of 6L6 and EL34 tubes, but feel free to give it a shot I suppose. Don't be surprised if you fry something though.

Hmmm, I was under the impression from the latest Mesa ads featuring JP that his current rig is RKs and Lonestar specials. Of course, I'm hardly a trainspotter when it comes to Petrucci. yet another example of a highly skilled player with a constipated tone, as far as I'm concerned.

Nah a freakin hated that amp.
So touchy.

I actually miss the epiphone.

People rag on my ass all the time owning and wanting good/expensive amps and yet still using an Epi.....

Play bass for awhile! I changed to bass for a couple of years and when I went back to guitar it was awesome, and alot easier to play!

Actually.
You are incorrect...

Bloody New Zealanders.

Petrucci uses 3 Road kings (which are effectively Dual rectifiers with an extra channel and a few more options (ie-channel loops) ) and 2 lone star heads.
RK's for dirty sounds. LS's for cleans.

Re: Unhappy with my rig

OK, son. Here's what you have to do.

Schedule a date with your Rectifier. Spend the entire afternoon with 'him'. Touch him. Be one with him. And eventually stick him (with new tubes). Then touch him some more. Play around with him (and his dials). He wants to make you happy. You will find tone.
