Unseated Frets on a 2008 Gibson Flying V

I just bought a 2008 Gibson Flying V Faded (Worn Cherry). Trying to get the action lower, I noticed it needed a fret leveling. After examining it further almost all of the frets have come unseated. I can put a .005 feeler gauge under a few of them. The fretboard was really dry so imagine this is the reason they are "wiggling out". Anyone else have a problem with a 2008 Gibson?

Yep lots of them. Search the net you’ll find many occurrences. Lots of complaints, mostly about frets sticking out on the sides, cutting hand/fingers.

My 2005 Faded V was pretty bad about hand cutting until I took a sanding block to it.

This occurrence is common to any guitar kept in variable weather conditions. Metal frets and wood expand and contract at different rates, so when the change is quick it can break any glue bonds, or stick out proud of the fretboard on top or sides.

Take good care of your wood, friends! It's a long term relationship. And when necessary, reshape your fret ends to taste.

Why didn’t it happen to any of the twenty other guitars I had in the same apartment at the time? Here’s a hint: The Gibson was like that when I bought it, and waiting a year didn’t change anything.

My new Gibson isn’t like that at all.

Over oiling your fingerboard causes this too. A couple times a year is plenty.

I haul guitars back and forth from work home to home base semi annually. Usually by aerovehicle, from damp to dry climate. Never had a fret pop yet. Tuning issues for a day or two. Maybe.

Well, that's too bad, but not catastrophic. You can deal with it until the guitar needs frets. Just get your frets leveled and dressed as well as you can, and live with the gaps till then. If needed, you can fill the gaps with black aliphatic resin glue, basically used like caulk.
