Unsung, underrated six string heroes

I am not sure this thread has been done here before. Who do you think are the most underrated, unrecognized guitar players. I am hoping this thread might turn us on to players we are unfamiliar with or make us revisit some of their past work. My first nominee would have to be Mick Ronson from Bowie's band. Here he is tearing it up with Elton John. Amazing.

Re: Unsung, underrated six string heroes

I'd vote for these guys:

Jerry Doucette - Mama Let Him Play

---and because I'm way too lazy tonight to look up names, the guitarists from:
The Refreshments
The Pursuit of Happiness
Jason and the Scorchers
Cheap Trick
Great White - Rock Me, gets me fired up every time
P.O.D. - for the notes he didn't play in Youth of a Nation
The Donnas - infectious rhythm, like Too Bad About Your Girl

I think Warren Haynes is underrated by a lot of people, but he gets a lot more attention then my first two artists:

Darrell Scott YouTube1, YouTube2.

Aside from being an amazing song writer (a lot of Nashville artists have bought his songs; Travis Tritt, Brad Paisley, The Dixie Chicks, some others), he's an incredible Banjo, Mandolin, Dobro/Lap Steel, Piano, Pedal Steel and Guitar player. He is part of Robert Plant's Band of Joy, playing banjo, steel, mandolin and all the electric guitar that isn't Buddy Miller (who is another underrated player). Here's a clip of him with them too.

The other is Guthrie Trapp. Link1, Link2. He's a bit Nashville session player, I've seen him live with a few projects and can never get over how effortless he makes it look. He's a good Mando player too.

I will have to also nominate Paulie Z from ZO2 on this thread the guy has an amazing voice and is a monster guitar player.

Re: Unsung, underrated six string heroes

I really like Malcolm young, he's a great inspiration to me on my rhythms. Lately as I've been playing lead more often (though primarily rhythm), I find that Claudio Sanchez from Coheed and Cambria is a really good melodic player. I like to shred a little more, but he has taste in his solos that I think is becoming more rare.

Duke Levine......Steuart Smith.....Jay Owens.......Larry Davis.......Neul Giraldo........Daryal Struemer.......Shuggie Otis.... Dave Mason.....Tinsley Ellis

Re: Unsung, underrated six string heroes

Ronson underrated? In what alternate universe? I've never talked to anyone who didn't absolutely love him, and in music circles, everyone knows him.

My quick votes go to Glen Buxton/Michael Bruce, Sam Andrew/James Gurley, Wayne Kramer/Fred Smith, Robbie Krieger, and Keith Levene. All were highly, highly important in their bands' sound and success, but all were overshadowed/anonymized by having "legends" as bandmates, and/or by being only one half of a well-oiled two-guitar unit.

Ronson underrated? ...in music circles, everyone knows him.

Yes, we know him but the millions of Bowie and Ian Hunter fans couldn't pick him out of a lineup. Next time someone tells you they are a huge David Bowie fan mention Ronson and get ready for the deer-in-the-headlights look. Ronson is never mentioned with Clapton, Beck, Townshend, Page and the other arena rock British guitar gods.

Re: Unsung, underrated six string heroes

Clapton, Beck, Townshend, Page

Blame marketing. For the most part, those guys concentrated on guitar and each was a viable headline attraction. Ronno was more difficult to categorise. He played numerous instruments and was a fantastic arranger. He was also quite definitely a sideman. Bowie always had a knack of choosing collaborators who would not upstage him. (Except, of course, for Iggy!)

Re: Unsung, underrated six string heroes

Lee Roy Parnell - Magic slide work with a Strat, much the same with a LP but leaning more into Duane Allman territory.

Really? That sounds ridiculous to me. Then again, moving among metal circles, I don't really encounter many other huge Bowie fans.

(Speaking of Bowie, Gerry Leonard is awesome on the latest album)

Wayne Perkins as a solo artist. Wayne and I hang out regularly sitting around and picking over here at my house or his. The boy regularly baffles the crap out of me with some of the stuff he does!!
Example of his solo stuff.

Same thing with ol Terry Powers who is also a Birmingham native. After the 2012 heart attack and some other health issues Terry is not what he once was but still a solid player.
