Unsung, underrated six string heroes

Phil Manzanera

John Christ - Danzig. Nobody has filled his shoes since. Tommy victor is awesome for Prong, but he's no JC. Like watching someone with downs ride a surf board, when it comes to the solos.

Not sure if he too well known but I love the playing of Andy Timmons lately. His tone for me is smooth and to die for. I'm taking about solo instrumental stuff not Danger Danger.

Willie Nelson

Charlie Daniels

I go back and forth on Willie a lot. I love his music, and he's easily one of my favorite songwriters, but his guitar playing sometimes drives me crazy. Some if it is amazing, but sometimes I think he can be really sloppy. I just don't know how to feel about it. I saw him in concert a few years ago, and it was really good, but the first 30 minutes were rhythmically terrible, and it was clearly him. His strumming rarely synced with the rest of the band, and his timing was off. When they played "Good Hearted Woman" it all seemed to click and the rest of the show was spot on. I think he was just really really high when he got on stage.

I didn't even know Charlie played guitar until I saw this post, I bet most people just think of him as a fiddle player.

Even though I know he is pretty well known, but I think a lot of people underrate Mark Knopfler's playing ability. Check out his record with Chet Atkins, there are times when I almost can't tell which is which.

His Sgt Pepper album made me a fan and buy two other CDs.
Agreed. So tasteful and so talented. He is a new inspiration. Him and Pete Thorn. Crazy tastefulness.

Wow. That was so awesome. Just stunning. I have seen Adrian before but this really blew me away. Thanks for posting!

Dweezil Zappa.

Not only a bonafide chip...but a rock on his own as well. Inspiring player. Check out the Zappa plays Zappa vids. Damn.

This one is odd, but I have to give props to Andy from the ProGuitarShop demos. Usually, when I watch one of his videos, I'm as blown away by his playing as by the gear.

I have to agree with Dweezil. I saw him do a guitar duel with Vai at a Zappa Plays Zappa show and it made me want to go home and burn my guitars.

Re: Unsung, underrated six string heroes

Paul Simon
Jorma Kaukonen
Joni Mitchell
Stephen Stills
Bob Dylan

All very good guitar players, some of them great. None of them except for Jorma are really thought of as guitar players first and foremost.

Paul McCartney

He is a ripping guitarist, and was all the way back to the Beatles years (in the studio)...but he is almost universally thought of as a songwriter, singer, and bassist.

Sam Broussard

One hardcore mother****er of a guitarist (and songwriter). Yet almost no one outside of Cajun country knows his name.

Gary Talley

Ex Box Top ("Cry Like a Baby," "The Letter"), now Nashville pro. Extremely good guitar player. Nobody has heard of him outside of Memphis and Nashville.
