Unsung, underrated six string heroes

Re: Unsung, underrated six string heroes

..without reservations of any sort....Criss Oliva from Savatge. Amazingly melodic and shredding.

Re: Unsung, underrated six string heroes

Adrian Legg
I've got his book "Customising Your Electric Guitar". Not only does he play like an absolute fiend, but he's got mad-scientist level luthier skills.

I'll add Greg Bergdorf of Zebrahead. Well at least he was their guitar. He just left the band.

Re: Unsung, underrated six string heroes

Stephan Jenkins (Third Eye Blind)

You think of Semi Charmed Life's G-D-C, but that band had some REALLY deep guitar arrangement.

Weird tunings galore, too. Half their songs are played in tunings that don't even have names.

I can't even post an example because you won't understand / love the guitar work like I do.

Re: Unsung, underrated six string heroes

In no particular order:
Josh Homme - QOTSA, Them Crooked Vultures, Kyuss
Prince
James Mankey - Concrete Blonde
Jim McCarty - Cactus
Scott Ian - Anthrax, SOD
Stephen Stills - CSNY, Solo
Andreas Kisser - Sepultura
Me - Various

I feel like you meant to go on top.

Re: Unsung, underrated six string heroes

Now that you mention it.....:scratchch

One more:
Craig Ross - Lenny Kravitz

Re: Unsung, underrated six string heroes

Karl Sanders - Nile

Andy LaRocque - King Diamond

Fixed. Jerry Cantrell is just as good as everyone else says he is. I don't think he really did anything new for music, just took his influences and shook em up into Alice in Chains.

That is just plain wrong. Then again, I take it you're not an Alice in Chains fan to begin with.

Listen to this fukking guy - he is playing the SHIIIIIET out of his guitar

Superlatively unique style, too.

Re: Unsung, underrated six string heroes

Jerry Cantrell is in fact underrated. He is a great great great rhythm player who has tasteful leads, is insanely creative with what he writes, and puts down some great vocal harmonies to go with it. Very underrated; Alice in Chains as a whole is underrated.

Re: Unsung, underrated six string heroes

I'll second the Leo Nocintelli (or how ever you spell it).

I can't believe no one has mentioned Richard Thompson.

Another one of my personal favorites, Tyler Grant. He was the national flatpicking champion in 2008. But aside from that, he's actually an amazing country and rock electric guitar player. He is one of my personal guitar heroes, as I strive to be able to pick bluegrass exceptionally well, but also able to play rock, country, blues and anything else electric that strikes my fancy. There are way too many bluegrass flatpickers who can't play anything but the same runs of 16th and 32nd notes in a G or C position (capo to key). I couldn't find any videos of him playing electric, but here he is doing some complex cross picking:

You know my uncle is big into them, and I just never got into it. I like maybe two songs by them, but I could never sit through an entire album. I tried to do The Devil put Dinosaurs Here, but I couldn't listen to it from beginning to end. I don't know why, but they just aren't my vibe.

I feel like another two would be:
James Valentine (Maroon 5)
Dave Garofalo (Safetysuit)

Re: Unsung, underrated six string heroes

One of the most underrated guitarists I know is Andy Timmons, just fantastic phrasing, feel and tone. His playing is just amazing:

Johnny Ramone is definitely underrated. He is always considered a guy that bashes chords for 2.5 minutes per song but if you listen to his body of work he has laid down some great textures and tasteful leads.

The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here is probably their worst album if you are giving them a chance where you might get into them. It is just such a dense album that you have to listen to more than a few times until you really get it/really enjoying it.

I'd just start with either Dirt or Facelift. I started with Facelift. Do not start with Tripod, SAP, or Black Gives Way To Blue; maybe Jar of Flies.
