Unusual pickup/wiring suggestion

So I am going to build an electric guitar.
It going to be a King V shape, Mahog wings w/ a maple neck and an ebony fretboard. The bride will be a string thrun Tune o Matic

It will have only 1 humbucker (bridge, obviously), and not pots, only an On/Off switch.

I am looking for:
a. A pickup suggestion.
I am looking for a tone similar to the one in this vid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=of4L3jY4Q9A
Jeff is playing an SH5, though his guitar is made out of an alder/maple combo.
I am looking for the same tightness and clearness (I can't explain what I like about that tone), but with more Balls, if it makes sense.

The main use of this guitar is METAL, I don't really care if the pickups is not extremely versatile. I am building a metal machine and I don't really care if it can play anything else (I have another axe for that...)

b. A wiring diagram for a 1 hum config w/ a single on/off switch, the only diagrams I found had a vol knob.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

When I'm not in here . . . I'm surfing for pointy guitars. Its like a disease. :headbang:

Re: Unusual pickup/wiring suggestion

Artie, please, put some clips on anywhere you like. I would like to hear that outerspace thing that abduced you. (not kidding, really interested on what was able to surprise you).

My main recording rig is torn down right now, but since I just got an Audio Buddy from a forum bro, maybe I can put up a quick clip.

Re: Unusual pickup/wiring suggestion

I drew this up almost an hour ago, then went in to watch the game, and fell asleep. :)

An on-off-on switch isn't really ideal for this, but you can make it work, like this:

Note: Thats two different ways to show the same thing. Just depends on which style of diagram you understand better.

Note 2: 80% isn't really an "audio" term, so I used -3db and -6db values instead. The -3db is probably what you want, although -6db would be cutting the volume approximately in half.

King V rocks indeed. Put no resistor and two pickups in series. Distortions in alder work great.

Why am I the only who likes that series way???:headbang:

Re: Unusual pickup/wiring suggestion

So you are saying that the Invader will have a lot of clarity? I heard its really loose.

Sorry . . . I missed the "tightness and clearness" part in the first post. I just saw the "metal" part. An Invader might not be the best choice. The wiring diagram will work with anything, however.

Re: Unusual pickup/wiring suggestion

So what pu will sound extremely tight and clear in a 1 hum mahogany/maple V w/ only one control?
As I have said before, Jeff waters' tone is very good in my opinion.

ArtieToo:
Why isn't an On-Off-On switch good for my type of setup?'
any suggestions?
I want a basic ON/OFF setup.
I guess its back to the original (on/off) idea.

Look closely at the top half of the diagram I made. Notice that when the pup is "off", you still have a path to hot through the "R1" resistor. It probably won't be a huge problem, but it does provide the posibility of noise coming through. Ideally, you should "short" the pup when off.

I'll see what alternatives I can come up with tomorrow. (Getting late here.)

Re: Unusual pickup/wiring suggestion

I have a question about the pu.
How will a Dimarzio X2N will sound in a maple necked mahogany bodied neckthrough guitar?
Will it sound anything like Chuck Schulinder's tone?
