Unusual speaker question.

Re: Unusual speaker question.

So it may actually be the Celestion 8.
It could be but Vox have used Vox/Jensen branded speakers as well as Celestions and other brands. The vox/Jensen branded could be custom made for Vox by Celestion or some other manufacturer. I don't really know.

Here's a Celestion 8. Doesn't look very similar.

Re: Unusual speaker question.

I'd be willing to bet that an 8" speaker in a Bose or Thiel designed cabinet would sound quite a bit different than the standard cab made to go with these micro amps.

Why not just compare speakers "directly", like by mounting them on a hole routed in a plywood board, leaned against a wall? For scientific purposes, step 1 ought to be taking cab variation out of the equation

That would be quite pointless experiment as what the speaker sounds without cab is irrelevant.

I don't know. That doesn't sound like a bad idea. It won't tell me what it sounds like in the cab, but it might demonstrate the basic difference in their characteristics. Since I have a small shop, with lots of wood, and woodworking tools, I just might try that.

Re: Unusual speaker question.

I think large non-resonant cab would be better. That would lessen the effect of cab, especially if open back, but still give meaningful review of speakers sound. Open air installation in my experience sounds very different from even an open cab.

BTW: When playing the lower G12H alone in my DIY 2x12, tone is stunningly close to what the oversized 1x12 with same speaker sounded like. You'd need a side by side comparison to notice the difference. Both are pine with a similar structure though.

Re: Unusual speaker question.

Sounds like a fun time and a good reason to have an all day jamboree, but there's also been some good comparison videos made in the past couple years.
Video shootouts can give a good idea of how X relates to Y and Z, even though it's not your rig or your tone.

No.

Celestion NEVER sells entirely unmarked speakers to their bulk customers... even the Mesas and the Marshalls are always labelled Celestion in some way.

Also....the lowend celestions for combo amps are BAD bad bad.

Ok then... mounting different speakers on different but identically designed baffles in the same DIY cab

Interesting video from Johan, his speaker shootouts are nice

Reaffirms my beliefs:
1) m-70 hate is undeserved
2) china v30s come with a half-serving of buzzsaw
3) chinese t-75's are utter crap that makes ANYTHING sound like a cheapo guitar with an emg 81

Some way ?

Re: Unusual speaker question.

I've got a couple different options here. I could just build a small 2x8 cab, with a divider between the chambers, and footswitch to go back and forth between the two speakers in real time. But I'd be using wood for something I'd probably never use again. Or, I could just record one into Reaper, then mount and record the other. I've got a pair of Sennheiser e609 Silver's and an e906, and a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8. The latter test might be more valid since it would use the actual cab in question.
