Unwound G for Acoustic???????

Not sure is this is the right forum...anyway does anybody know if there is such a thing as an unwound g string specifically for an acoustic (as opposed to putting an electric g on it) and if so do you lose a lot in tone using it? I'd sure love to bend that string more and play some real lead (well as real as I can do it) on my acoustic......

Yes. I tried a plain third on my ES175, and my wife (who doesn't play guitar) asked me why that string sounded so sh1tty and twangy.

Most acoustic sets have fairly heavy Gs... toss a wound 20 on there :D

Re: Unwound G for Acoustic???????

You can just put a heavier plain string on there but the intonation will be off. There is a Tusq saddle available that is precompensated for a plain g string. You really need to do that if you go to a plain 3rd. It also will sound different than a wound string - YMMV as to whether you like it or not. A really thin wound string may bend a bit easier but it also will break more easily. Bottom line is that an acoustic guitar is a different instrument from an electric and you can't really make them play or sound the same.

Just stick to the fat bronze phosphor type stuff for your acoustic, or as someone stated - it will sound ****ty and twangy.
