Upgrade from Digitech RP355?

I've never quite been satisfied with my RP355 since I got it. Switching between presets is a bit of a pain, with only up/down controls as well as the noticeable patch dropout. I originally thought the stompbox mode would help, but it's so limited and almost useless. The amp a/b helps as there is no noticeable drop-out, but it's still limited.

There are a few things I really like about the RP355 that I wouldn't want to live without like USB patch editing, and USB recording (ASIO Drivers).

I've been considering the RP500 line as I think it has more stompbox options and the ability to switch between patches in a bank, but it would still have patch drop-outs and looses the amp a/b, which would suck.

I've also had my eye on Line 6 Pod HD line, but I've not been able to find them locally to try them out, so I don't know as much about them.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Do you use a lot of effects?

I could never hang with all of the editing that one has to do to get usable stuff on the multi units..the presets are ridiculous and all of the scrolling and parameters.

I can say that stomps are much easier to deal with on the fly....turn a knob and it is instant.

Good luck......I have heard good things about the Vox and Boss units, but I would go check things out for myself.

I don't use a ton of effect, mostly the usual. The amp modeling is probably more important than the specific number of effects for me.

But options are nice.

RP500 came out in...what...2008?

in MultiFX world that means it's about three years out of date already.

the HD Line 6 modelers are killer and they just came out so they might still be useful for a few weeks.

For amp modeling I'd probably check the Line 6 HD stuff. I use an RP1000, and it is pretty good and the stompbox mode on it is really nice, along with the amp and external effects loop. But if modeling is your main thing, I'm not sure it would be my first choice.

Don't give up on Digitech just yet. With the advent of the new RP8675309, they've fairly turned the corner on musical-sounding, realistic amp models. No, really. Promise. If I'm lyin', I'm dyin'.

I've been using a GSP 5 for the last 22 years. In my mind, they've never really improved that much on the distortion and echo. With rack systems, you kinda have to do your homework in advance and if something isn't sounding right, I've been just switching guitars. And that works for me; if the Tele doesn't have the right tone, the Les Paul will, and vice versa.

Line 6 does seem to update their line more often than digitech. Though from everything I've seen, the podhd's don't really sound better overall, just different. And they are like $100 more for the equivalent unit.

Don't give up on Digitech just yet. With the advent of the new RP8675309, they've fairly turned the corner on musical-sounding, realistic amp models. No, really. Promise. If I'm lyin', I'm dyin'.

You know, I wish Digitech came out with refreshed units often enough to validate these jokes. I'm not thrilled having to consider something dated, but at the same time I don't know if I want to drop the premium on the POD HD line if no one can agree they're noticeably better.

For amp modeling I'd probably check the Line 6 HD stuff. I use an RP1000, and it is pretty good and the stompbox mode on it is really nice, along with the amp and external effects loop. But if modeling is your main thing, I'm not sure it would be my first choice.

I like the idea of the amp loop so I can use my amp's sound. I am disappointed in the lack of an aux-in, which will make practicing with backing tracks cumbersome (seriously WTF).

You play along with backing tracks over USB.

If you're using a computer to listen to the backing tracks, its quite easy and actually more convenient.

Yes, and perfect for practicing in my office, next to my computer. But for jamming with my dad, less so because he has no computer near his practice area.

It's a trade off, but I get more than I loose going to the RP1000.

If anyone has one, I think I read in the manual that you can assign the top buttons to any toggle setting, but can you have more than one setting happen in the same press? One thing the RP355 has is the Amp A/B which lets you set up 2 different setting on the amp emulator to toggle, which gives 2 different sounds in the same preset (rhythm/lead I guess).

I didn't know if that was directly possible with the RP1000.
