Upgrades for a neck-through Ibanez

First, please forgive me if this has already been addressed in another thread! If it has, I'm unable to find it, and will be happy to read up if anyone can link to it.

I've had a 27-fret Ibanez Xiphos for a few years now, and while it plays and sounds great acoustically, I've never been really inspired by the stock Dimarzio pickups (D-Activator bridge + Air Norton S neck). They're serviceable, but they don't really make me want to rip like the Duncans in my other guitars do. I REALLY want to get something with some mojo in there!

The guitar is a maple/walnut neck-thru with mahogany wings and a rosewood fretboard, Ibanez Edge-III bridge + Goeldo Backbox stabilizer. It sounds almost like a Les Paul with just a little more modern "zing" from the bridge. The thing that complicates pickup selection is the 27-fret neck; due to the reduced space they used a single-coil-sized humbucker that sits closer to a middle-position than a traditional neck slot. This means that the selection of humbuckers that'll fit is pretty limited.

The tones I like are "wrong", too. I currently use an APH1 neck pickup with an Invader bridge model in my cheap bolt-on Dean, and it sounds fantastic! I love having an ultra-hot bridge pickup with a low-output neck pickup, it helps get a warm sound with plenty of clarity in the neck slot with a killer sizzle in the bridge position. Coil-splitting with this setup is amazing too, which is good because I don't like humbuckers with a clean sound. My other reference guitar is an old no-name mahogany V with a Kahler 2220 bridge and JB/Jazz pickups, which is traditional-sounding but versatile and awesome.

I'm leaning toward the Little '59 or Cool Rails neck pickups for the warm/clear neck pickup sound, probably the '59. What I'm wondering is, does anyone have experience using either of these with any of the newer "metal" pickups SD has out? Scott from Skeletonwitch highly recommended the Black Winter, which sounds like it would work, but I'm worried about getting an icepick in the high-mids. I'm also really curious how the Nazgûl and Pegasus would match up with either of the aforementioned neck pickups; the Nazgûl seems like an obvious choice since this is mainly a metal guitar, but I can't help thinking the Pegasus might offer more clarity. No sense muddying up the response on an Ibanez, right?

I'm open to other suggestions as well, I know some of the "Custom" series are supposed to be great for metal with some versatility in there too. Just hoping someone out there has run into the "H+S" pickup conundrum before, thanks in advance to anyone with any suggestions!

I'd go alternative 8 in the bridge with a cool rail all day long

Rob Chappers did a review of this setup on youtube with one of his Chapman guitars. Its perfection to my ears and I currently run Alternative 8's in all but 2 of my guitars. Cool rails are in one of my guitars and I love them to death

One of the forum members, MastaC, had an El Diablo for sale recently. I would check with him to see if he still has it, it would be perfect for that guitar.

If you want a really warm sound in the neck position, you probably need something with less scoopy EQ and slightly more output than a typical neck pickup in your case. The 27 fret neck really offsets the pickup as you know, so it sounds more like a middle pickup than anything. In fact, I'd say that's probably one of the reasons the Air Norton S wouldn't sound like it's supposed to in that guitar. To get a more believable "creamy neck pickup" tone, you might want to try a Hot Rail (and just not raise it too high) or something else that's fairly warm.

And here I was, almost ready to give the A8's a try....

Rob Chappers, seriously? The man was clearly dropped on his head as a baby. And not just a few times.

I dunno about that, he seems pretty cool to me (and I hate his collection, you bastard!!!!!)

Remember also (and I used this WITH success) you have 21 days to exchange it if you don't like the alternative 8.

I had bought a bass set I was unhappy with and they did an exchange with the only cost to me of being the shipping back (which I used the cheap USPS method)

Re: Upgrades for a neck-through Ibanez

You say a 'warm sound with plenty of clarity' which are sort of opposites- I like a Little 59 rather than a Cool Rails, as the Cool Rails has no real warmth, but lots of clarity. Either one, though, would be a good choice with any of the metal pickups: Black Winter, Pegasus, etc.

I've never had to use the exchange policy yet, but if I choose wrong with this one, I might finally need to!

...of course, I'm just as likely to send the "mistake" to a different guitar and just buy the replacement outright...

Yea, the "warm with clarity" thing has always been a tough balance to achieve, especially in the neck slot with severe distortion - that's one of the big reasons I like using a low-output neck pickup with an aggressive bridge. I'm leaning heavily toward the '59 for this, especially since the neck pickup on this guitar will be so close to what's normally the "middle" slot! I'm just hoping to get a set that'll match up in terms of frequency response. I learned the hard way that two great pickups don't necessarily sound great together after trying the JB bridge with the APH1 neck in multiple guitars - not one would let me switch pickups without changing amp settings to compensate. Eventually I just got the Jazz to go with the JB and paired the APH1 with an Invader to get the tonal balance right.

The Pegasus sounds appealing for the clarity-at-high-gain option, but I wonder if there's enough distortion and character on tap. The Nazgûl could be good for brutality, but I don't want something too fuzzy, muffled or "woofy". I've heard the Black Winter at work and it sounds great with Marshall and Blackstar amps, but I'm worried it might be a bit too "classic rock" or, again, too soft on the bottom end. Having the neck slot so far up the scale makes it a little harder to guess how they'll pair up.
