Upgrading a P-bass?

Re: Upgrading a P-bass?

The Hot has heaps of midrange and skimps on treble 'n' bass. IMO, the QP is probably closer to what you desire. Also, the mod will be visible to your knowledgable guitar friends. ;)

:laugh2: I love playing bass so much, its a blast, a totally different instrument than the electric guitar, though its a different version of the same concept. I dont need alot of mids, especially high mids. this isnt a guitar!!

I'll check out the quarter pounder then. :D

one last time: gotoh VS leo quan.

the leo is expensive... but is it worth the money, or is the gotoh as good?

It's your money. You decide.

I would be happy to use either and I own examples of both BUT my gut instinct is that a Gotoh would have been inappropriate on my American Fender Jazz Bass and that a Badass II would be overkill on a Squier.

One other consideration. Many years ago, I tried fitting a Badass II bridge on my 78/79 fretless Precision Bass. It turned out that the bridge would not adjust low enough to get a decent action on a fretless instrument without resetting the neck pitch angle. On a Gotoh 201 bridge, this would not be a problem. (Just a thought, in case you get an urge to defret a bass.)

Finally, my brother swears by the Schaller 3-D bass guitar bridge. Meanwhile, I swear at my brother for declining to play bass for me.

I dont think ill ever defret it... but how low were you trying to get the action? ridiculously low?

Id like to pickup the badass simply because I know its top notch, but if the gotoh is brilliant as well then well... I just wish there was a website that sold both, so i didnt have to make 2 separate orders. :lmao:

Re: Upgrading a P-bass?

I've had a BAII on my P-basses but actually prefer the stock bridge. As for pickups the Dimarzio Model P is one bad ass mofo for playing aggressive pick style bass, I prefer it overwhelmingly to the Hot or QP.

The Badass II is a perfect retrofit for a fretted American Fender bass guitar.

On my factory fretless Fender Precision Bass, there was nothing protruding from the fingerboard for the strings to clear. Hence, the lowest setting on the Badass II was, in effect, 2mm too high for my needs.

IMO, the Badass and Gotoh bridges are equally good but different. I am of the opinion that somebody with a Gotoh on a USA Fender will seem like a cheapskate whilst somebody with a Badass II on a Squier will seem to have far more money than sense. A one hundred Dollar bridge on almost two thousand Dollars worth of bass guitar is proportionate. A one hundred Dollar bridge on a two hundred Dollar bass guitar seems over the top.

My favourite DiMarzio P replacement is the Will Power. It totally ROCKS, fingerstyle or pick.

The Gotoh 201 bridge looks quite like the Yamaha design on the upmarket Attitude models. I wonder why? ;)

Re: Upgrading a P-bass?

I don't know too much about basses, but a LOT of punk and hard rock bands use the QP for P-Bass, which sounds huge! If you listen to some Rise Against, all their bass stuff is done with a QP, very throaty and punchy if you know what I mean.

Re: Upgrading a P-bass?

I have one bass that I've done some upgrades on, and aside from pickups, the two biggest things were:

1.) a proper setup by a good tech
2.) a bone nut

The nut was part of the setup; again the factory nut left much to be desired in terms of intonation at the lower frets. Also, open-string notes were soft compared to fretted notes. Now, aside from being the heaviest musical instrument in history, it's pretty sweet.

this is exactly what I want. thanks for the description bro!

I'm getting the Gotoh and the QP.

My bass doesnt have its tone knob, just volume. the QP is going to be brighter right?

Re: Upgrading a P-bass?

Good choices.

Probably but, as a Mark Hoppus enthusiast, this will be exactly what you wanted.

update:

got a replacement bridge for it.

its fender style, but seems to be black satin.

kinda looks like this.

its heavier than the stock bridge. the bass feels brighter now, which is god for both my picking and fingerstyle, IMO.

pickups soon. :)

Re: Upgrading a P-bass?

If said band Thinks the bass player is barely heard I'd change bands... They obviously think Bassists are people without enough chops to be a guitarist.

hehehe

the remark was hinting at the fact that all basses sound the same.

and the person who said it used to play bass.

Re: Upgrading a P-bass?

Basses usually aren't heard when the bassist scoops the mids and boosts the gargantuan lows and the highs. I hate when the bass is boomy and muddy. It's annoying.

I've found out with my band that the contrary works best; taking a bit of bass out, adding mids and taking some highs out. Keeps the bass sound tight and you can tell notes apart. That's with a very deep sounding bass that I use. Don't think for a second you don't need mids just because you aren't playing a guitar.

Hope your tone chasing ends up good!

thanks bro!

I myself usually keep the EQ flat. I also removed the tone pot from my bass. bass should be as flat as possible, with little EQ at all, it should be fundamental tone! I HATE boomy bass sound! i mean its fine to mess around at your home with but, live you NEED some tone in there! not just air moving around!

IMO, the Gotoh 201 in black should look smart next to the OEM b/w/b scratchplate. Perhaps, instead of buying a fancy new pickguard, you should spend that money on some black machineheads? Something with a D-Tuner on the E string might prove interesting. ;)

I am dropping QP's in my P as well and was reading through this thread, when I came upon this post I laughed out loud! I had a '78 J way back when, I pulled all the fret wires and filled the slots. I loved that thing! Now I'm thinking about my P. I'm older now with more cash, I might just buy another kneck.
