Upgrading entry level Jackson Dinky

Hey guys. I got a deal on a lovely new Jackson Dinky JS32TQ arch top in red. I wanted a super strat with a fixed bridge for rock/metal and drop tunings. I got it for 260 bucks and I'm gonna change the PUs and jack first thing. I really wanted to try the Tonerider Octane with Alnico 8. I decided to put a Rocksong in the neck but was sent an Alnico II Classic instead. Got both for 110 bucks. The guy said he'd just give me a rebate because the pickups wouldn't be much different at all. Same magnet, almost the same DC resistance. So what do you say? I guess the set would be like an Alternative 8 paired with a Alnico II Pro. Yay or nay?

Since you have them, might as well try them. I do think it's odd that your particular model of guitar is advertised as am arch top. A simple Google search will tell you it's not.

I can't say whether or not the Alternative 8 and Alnico II Pro combo would be anything similar to what you have, as there is more to a pickup than the magnet (I think the wind pattern between the Rocksong and A2 Classic is different), but if the pickups you bought are supposed to be based on the Alt 8 and A2P, they might sound similar.

I don't think the Octane is based on the Alt 8. The Generator is basically a JB I've heard and the Alnico II Classic is their version of the "Slash pickup" I guess. The Octane is their "modern heavy metal or djent pickup". It's got a lower DCR than the Alt 8 that's all I can tell. I'm just wondering if it makes sense to pair these two.

You won't know until you try, but looking at the Octane it looks fairly interesting. Apparently it uses 2 different gushes of wire, which is cool.

Well, a real Aternative 8 paired with an Alnico II Pro would be cool. I am not really up on my Tonerider pickups. But since you have it, go with what you have. It might sound great.

Re: Upgrading entry level Jackson Dinky

This guitar is kind of inspired by the first Schecter C-1 Jerry Horton signature which was a mahogany super strat with a tune-o-matic fixed bridge and Duncan Distortion and Jazz. I considered gettting the Distortion set but wanted more versatility for clean tones which is why Horton chose the Jazz I guess. At the same time I wanted more aggression and a tighter bass from the bridge pup than the JB can deliver. An Alternative 8 would've cost me 105 bucks here in Germany and the Tonerider combo I got for 110 bucks. People say they are not bad at all but I've only used their bass pups.
