Upgrading from Probuckers. What would you go with?

Re: Upgrading from Probuckers. What would you go with?

The thing is, I'm pretty set on what I'd do if I wanted a hotter set (A2 Pro/Custom) so I was wondering what would be a logic step in making what I've got better.

These pups are fine as it is. And diapers aren't cheap!

This would depend if you think hotter is better, or you need an EQ change.

Upgrade the electrics - New CTS pots and orange drop caps. Its bound to sound better!

There's been numerous articles and side-by-sides tests proving that the value of the pots & caps are what makes an audible difference, not the type or brand. Even an article or two on this site. How many of the people claiming to hear a difference actually put the old & new parts on a multi-meter? Pots & caps usually come with a 10%, or even 20% mfg tolerance, even CTS, depending on what specs the reseller wants. 500K pots are rarely ever 500K. They're usually somewhere between 450 to 550K, sometimes 400k to 600K. That's where the tone difference comes from, not the brand. Caps work the same way. Most of the time there's no audible difference, just wishful thinking after spending the money on parts and a tech to install them.

I was on a site where a guy had spent $150 on a new wiring harness, he was duped into it by the seller claiming all kinds of wonderful things. For that kind of money, he could have gotten a high quality replacement PU or two (especially used) and truly gotten an improvement in tone. Or spent much less and swapped a magnet or two. If you want higher quality electronics that'll last longer, fine. But don't do it expecting any change in sound.

I'm just checking opinions here. Got a newborn so all my funds go in that direction!
I absolutely love the Probuckers as they are.

Opinion here is "Go change a Diaper" and immediately put the cost of a set of A2P's in a college fund.

The Slash set is dark and not so great IMO. Neck is OK at best, bridge is boring as hell

Just because you're a dad doesnt mean you cant have some hobby, in fact I would say it would be a plus. Put a guitar in his/her hand asap too

Re: Upgrading from Probuckers. What would you go with?

In mag swapping a few Probuckers over the years, I've found two of the early claims have fallen by the wayside. They have polished magnets, not roughcast, and the coils are not unbalanced, the differences are minimal and fall within the specs of matched coils (which is the case with Gibson Burstbuckers too). The best of intentions...

Move the stock neck pickup to the bridge position, and put a DiMarzio PAF Master neck in the neck position.
