Upgrading PRS to a pair of Antiquity's. Thoughts?

2007 PRS Custom 22 quilted top that I love, but pickups I hate: Dragon IIs.

I plan to swap to two SD Antiquity pickups, however I think a magnet is getting flipped to work with the five way rotary switch. Hopefully that won't hurt the tone any. I want rich, lots of high mids to take advantage of the maple top. My other guitars are a Tele USA Ash body and Music Man Albert Lee HH in mahogany. I like to think the tone wood choice and pickups and rocking 10 gauge strings will be a nice combo. I am going for sounds like: Silversun Pickups, Tool, Deftones, Chevelle. Drop 1/2 step now, maybe up to 1 1/2 steps someday.

My first real guitar, a Washburn, I put a SD Invader in the bridge and loved that guitar. Gifted it to a friend when I got into a few more than I needed.

What is the opinions of Antiquity pickups as a pair. Should I get a Pearly Gates in the neck instead?

Like Black Cat and OCD in front of a H&K 18 with 10" Celestion Speaker at the moment. Like a good Fuzz and roll the volume back sound as well.

welcome to the forum!

the antiquities will sound great in the guitar and are a nice matched pair but im not sure about them for the music you list. both adam and Stephen used jb's in the bridge of their guitars. the antiquities are very vintage paf sounding and for such modern heavy music I think you might be better served by something else. if you want a vintage output set then id try a pearly gates bridge over the antiquity bridge.

I've had a Seth Set in a 22 fret PRS for a long time. It probably the best sounding guitar I own. I bet the Antiquities would rock.

Re: Upgrading PRS to a pair of Antiquity's. Thoughts?

Some of us much prefer Seth's over Ant's. Ant's have aged magnets, and A2's don't have much treble or output to begin with, and aging them reduces it even further. I have 5 sets of Seths', all in guitars. My one Ant set sits in a box after being taken out of a guitar.

I agree with jeremy. Vintage output Neck/Rhythm/"Bass" position pickup, hotter Bridge/Treble position pickup.

Re: Upgrading PRS to a pair of Antiquity's. Thoughts?

I've dropped a Whole Lotta Humbucker set into my PRS McCarty which I love. I also think that a '59/Custom Hybrid would work well in the bridge of your PRS, with something more vintage in the neck.

I've got Ants in my Bernie Marsden. They're much more suited for mellower hard rock, blues, and rock n roll.

Yep. Think of it like this....Ted McCarty was the President of Gibson, which means the PRS McCarty is almost like his last testament to the electric guitar. Seth Lover left his formula to Seymour Duncan, as a friend. So if you blend a McCarty with a Seth Lover, Antiquity, or WLH, it's like you're installing the pickups Ted McCarty would have chosen in a perfect world.

I love PRS guitars, but there's only one or two PRS pickups that are as good as Duncan's best.
Choosing the best SD vintage spec pickups for a PRS makes the guitar really come alive.

After talking with a guitar tech and my favorite guitar and preferred styles, we went with Jazz(N) and JB (B). I'll let you know how it works out.

Re: Upgrading PRS to a pair of Antiquity's. Thoughts?

You will not be able to fit a common Antiquity humbucker in the neck. The long legs do not have enough room in a PRS's neck position.

Re: Upgrading PRS to a pair of Antiquity's. Thoughts?

Can you get antiquities in 4-conductor? Without that you would not be able to wire it with the rotary nor use coil tap a la McCarty wiring.

Nice!

Personally I really like the idea of Seths in a McCarty. I've also heard of lots of players loving the Custom and '59.

Fun fact: first time I met Seymour in person was at a PRS party at NAMM. :)
