Urgent Help

Marshall MG50 DFX or Crate GLX65. I went to soundcontrol and i just could not decide. I am looking for a hard rock/Heavy Metal/Classic Rock. Oh and where can i find EMGs.

Re: Urgent Help

Those Crate amps are good sounding for solid state. Nice kickaround practice amps. But still good if you don't have the dough for a tube amp. Don't buy a Marshall unless it's a tube amp, defeats the purpose, plus they are overpriced, and I personally think the MG's sound bad.

Re: Urgent Help

i like the MGs, for the money they sound pretty good to my ears. easier to service aswell, wih marshall being in the UK and all. but if i was you, i would check out the AVT series, see if you can saave up just a bit moer. or go second hand.

Is the Line 6 Spider II any good
if you don't mind getting bashed for using modeling amps, then yes, it rocks

Re: Urgent Help

I like my MG alot, for the money it does the trick. I prefer its sound over the valvestate.

Re: Urgent Help

never thought i would say this but.. buy the crate *shutters*.. marshall mg series is the worst thing to come out of he marshall name. its a shame

Re: Urgent Help

The spider II isnt bad I have one it was a gift and done well with it. Its the 75W 2X12 but I am now looking for some diffent tone. Since it was a gift I will use it but looking to purchase a nice tube in the near future.

Re: Urgent Help

Personally, I'd save up until I can afford a better, higher quality amp ;)

A year or so ago, I was in the market for a new amp, and had to choose between the AVT20, MG50DFX, and several other SS amps. None of them I really liked TOO much. The MGs sucked, imho. The AVTs were half decent, and a NOS VS65R was even better sounding than that.

Then I found out about Laney, and how their all-tube LC-15s were in the sub-$300 price range. I called up the dealer, and got a brand new LC-15R (LC-15 with loop and spring reverb) for $300. This thing ripped apart any SS amp I had ever played, including the VS's which I was so happy with, until I went tube ;)

Re: Urgent Help

Definetely buy the Crate. I used to a MG100DFX, and while it covers just about everything - for metal (which is one of your categories, it just doesn't cut it. Crate's distortion is great at sufficient volumes. The only thing I'll give the Marshall over the Crate is it's tone controls are much more sensitive, thus increasing your tonal options and the fact that it's effects kill the Crates.

In conclusion, buy the Crate and be happy once again! ;)

Re: Urgent Help

I think americanmusicsupply.com carries EMG p/u's if you already know what model you want.
oops....you can get the one's already set up on the pickguard in a variety of configs. You just have to be comfortable taking a router to your strat if you put in humbuckers.
