Used MXR Carbon Copy Value

Been iterested in a carbon copy for a while. Demo'd one today and really liked it. It was 96 tax included. Does that seem a good valure on a used model? It was near scratchless and looked nearly new. I know they're expensive new.

Did I mentioned it sounded good through the cheap amp I demo'd it? Seems like a perfect analog dela for the price and mxr's are damn near indextructable.

Re: Used MXR Carbon Copy Value

Before you decide, check out the Malekko Ekko. IMO a better analog delay than the MXR (tho the MXR is quite great), for about the same price new (here in Sweden, it's even slightly cheaper). Gonna get me one of those next week, new tho.

Re: Used MXR Carbon Copy Value

Yeah You go the better end of the deal. I sold my Carbon Copy about six months ago at GC for about 90. Mine was in almost perfect condition, save some dust and velco when I had it attached to my pedal board.

Not a bad deal at all. Great delay. And of course there are others out there, however if you like what you hear and find it musical..... done deal!

Re: Used MXR Carbon Copy Value

The carbon copy just happened to be sitting beside a used red malekko. Think I should go back and give it a try?

BTW: Best price I could get them to do on the CC was eat the sales tax. Leaving $96. Offered $90 but they wouldn't budge. Really? Loosing a sale over $6. May go back and try the malekko but for the most part GC is evil.

I really hate GC and should flat boycott that place.

And you could possibly lose out on a great delay for $6 bucks!!!!!!!

GC may not have the greatest sales people, but they carry used and new inventory to rival most on-line stores and you can get your hands on it and try it out. I do not get the GC is EVIL part???

Find a local Mom and Pop store struggling to survive and give them your money....except they may need $100 on that used CC! Who is evil now????

What you really need is the cheapest delay out there.... go get a cheap used plastic behringer for $19 bucks.

And just think, I am only on my first Buffalo Trace (Really great Bourbon by the way) and ice.

Do what I do, ask for $96 no sales tax and a pack of strings or picks. They're willing to do that almost always. That really is a great delay, and I kind of wish I had mine back sometimes.

I'm guessing you either work for GC or aren't old enough to remember the excellent customer service you could only get at your local "mom & pop" stores. Since GC opened here I've had to sadly watch nearly all my favorite shops drop like flies. Not trying to start an argument by any means but stores like GC and WalMart may be able to sell cheaper but they've also been the reason nearly all small businesses can no longer stay afloat. Sorry, just not a fan of any mega stores. I used to work for a company that had been opened for 75yrs but had to fold since they couldn't sell to WalMart who wanted us to sell under our mfg. cost.

For the record; The sales guy at GC (who was extra nice and super helpful) was as shocked as I was that his Mgr. wouldn't budge over $6. Keep in mind, they most likely had about $30 in the pedal. They practically rape you when you trade equipment in there. When I asked the sales guy did they have much more than appx $30 in it he replied "Yeah, if even that much...."

Sorry, didn't mean to turn this into a GC rant and I totally apologize if I've offended any GC employees here.

All that being said, I still may go back today and check out the Malekko. Given the choice between the CC & the Malekko any opinions on which would be the better investment? The Malekko was a bit more expensive but I've read nothing but good reviews of it.

Re: Used MXR Carbon Copy Value

Sorry, at 54 years, definitely old enough..... wish I was 21 again and knew what I know now!!!!!!!!

The Carbon Copy is a great pedal. I have never played the Malekko so cannot give you any comparison. I do know that the CC version 2 (which I own) of the pedal improved the modulation, and just worked with almost everything I did with it. I am using the Ibanez Echo Shifter now due to its added ability to adjust the modulation and the slider is to die for.

GC serves a purpose. No, at the volume levels of inventory they can stock, the manufacture's are the ones to blame, they give the big name stores volume discounts so the Mom and Pop that only buys 5 units cannot compete with the store that buys 500!

GC is not to blame, blame the vendors and the manufactures for this situation.

Anyway, I see your point, no issues here. As for the $96 dollar CC.... its a good deal. If you like the other one better and its cheaper....better deal.

I do understand the customer service part, unfortunately, around me GC is actually the nicest group of people in the area. The mom and pop shops around here will dick me over $5. I tried to sell a flanger, asked for $50, and none of them were willing to give me more than $30. I went to GC asked for $50, and they even went to $75, cause they know that they were going to get $100 and it was going to go quick.

I don't have any experience Malekko, but I do know that the CC is a great piece of gear. The modulation is what really drew me to it, and I really regret selling it. I might take my next paycheck and get a new one. I have enough room left on my board for one Phase 90 sized pedal, and it would be a great addition.

Re: Used MXR Carbon Copy Value

the malekko allows you to control the modulation, which is cool. but i don't think it sounds better than the carbon copy.

Re: Used MXR Carbon Copy Value

The Carbon Copy has internal trimpots to adjust the depth and rate of the modulation.

Re: Used MXR Carbon Copy Value

CC's going for 70-80 on the bay all day (including shipping!) $90 isn't bad for in person. GC is respectable in their dealings.

And there are a host of fine Analog offerings these days. And, there are some way cheaper Analogue 'toned' digital stylings like the Rogue (I said it) and the Modtone etc...

Re: Used MXR Carbon Copy Value

Sorry everybody about my GC rant. I guess I'm lucky as almost all the small stores around here give you the Cheers treatment. "Place where everybody knows your name" sort of deal. haha! Not to mention the closest shop has one of the single best luthiers I've had the pleasure of knowing. He's way more reasonable price wise than GC and his work quality and wait time beats them hands down. He only deals in used stuff also. When I ask him what's his best price it's usually less than what I'm thinking. My gripe wasn't so much I couldn't part with the extra $6 but absolutely none of the small shops I deal with would have let me walk out over $6. As I mentioned, even the sales guy at GC was shocked his Mgr. wouldn't budge over such a small amount. He was quite friendly and helpful just for the record.

Now back on topic:
I assumed the CC had internal trim pots but I noticed the Malekko's trim pots were right up front on the top of the pedal. What a novel idea to not have to open the unit to adjust it.

The whole experience has made me decide to go with Aceman's suggestion of ebay. No hurry for a delay so I'll just wait until I can luck up on a good deal there or perhaps here. I've recently gone through a slimming down phase pedal wise and a delay is the only thing I can see needing now. Wish I had a pic of my old pedalboard. Simply ridiculous. At one point I was using one of these:

And I was gigging with it!!

I wish places by my house were like that, but they aren't. GC is the "place where everybody knows your name". I get great deals, and the manager says they do the most used deals as well as the most business in the area. They do care at that one. I've seen GC's where they don't.
