Usefulness of Digitech RP150?

I played one of 'em thru headphones at GC, and kinda dug it. It had that sort of distant sound, which for headphone jamming, works very well for me. That right-in-your-ear sound tires my ears out after awhile, but this one was very ear-friendly. So...

Does this unit do OK for recording? as a stomp box? as a preamp into a power amp? I'm thinking that "distant" sound might not translate too well through the front of an amp.

I may pick one up. Hundred bones ain't bad.

oh come on people, variations of this pedal have been out for what, like 2 years?! it's the first thing you see when you go into most GCs. I know some of you use this thing.

now.....DISCUSS!!!

I have the rp200 and have always thought it was decent. Here is a clip of it live
Agnus Dei
It is the only thing I am using (straight to PA)
I have since bought a SD twin tube, and it is better. But, I still use the rp200 some. Plus the online community is awesome for getting presets that are really good.

Re: Usefulness of Digitech RP150?

I have an RP300, which is fairly unimpressive. Its OK for bedroom jamming, but I find the quality of pretty much all its effects to be severely lacking, especially considering the older DigiTech stuff. I got the 300 to replace an aging RP-5, and the RP-5 sounds WAY better than the 300 in pretty much every repsect, while also being ten years older... The amp models on the 300 sound considerably better than the distortions in the RP5, but thats it.

The 150 has the USB interface that allows you to modify more of the effect paramaters, so perhaps with that one you can get some better sounds.

Re: Usefulness of Digitech RP150?

I've used Digitech RP300 for a while. Very good while not great. I think your best bet for using something like that is to get a flat response power amp to a speaker or just direct to PA via the speaker simulation. However, these new RP's seem to have been very ramped up in terms of features and they also claim to have a redesigned processor for it so maybe it'll be even better.

The only issue my 300 really had was that it could have been better in terms of clarity/definition. But, I performed live with it more times than I could count solely because its performance was stable and it EASILY cut through the mix which is not typical of digital floor preamps. Lead sounds are espescially easy to pull out of these things.

Then again, I dont know how the rp300 compares to the newer rp 150, 250,etc.

Good luck

That's what I noticed - I was having a ball doing lead stuff through headphones. I think it would be a GREAT home studio tool, where I'd use it just for leads, and I'd probably do rhythms another way with another device or two. I recall thinking if I get one, I'd have to figure out how to dry-up and tighten up the rhythm sounds, but maybe that's not even possible. Maybe it always has that clarity issue (which for some reason works nice for leads!)

Re: Usefulness of Digitech RP150?

The lack of clarity I think works for the leads as it keeps the tone loose which does give some solo tones a bit of character.

I think if you compare to other digital pedals like zoom or behringer, the clarity is THERE in other pedals...but I never used the other ones live unless I had stomp boxxes in front of them because the models in them just never cut through the mix. Something else that I cannot explain just isn't there.

Furthermore, Digitech Rp's have better cabinet simulation for live-without-amp playing and for recording!! The only other one that comes close is the behringer v-amp and I still thought using a pedal (or two) in front was necessary for live playing

I have tons of recordings using my rp300 both direct into the PA and using a mic'ed 4x10. Though at the time I did those recordings I had a bit of the '80s speed rock flu...I could post them but be warned!
