Using low output tubes with "hi-gain" amps

Hey guys, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to put low output tubes into a hi-gain amp... well more or less high gain (something like a TSL).
I mean that should give you a better clean sound and because you have that extra "gain" tube, you should be fine with the gain too?! Or am I missing something?

thanks

Re: Using low output tubes with "hi-gain" amps

The only thing that can happen is that your gain channel will sound grainier.
The best idea would be to tube it with JJ E-34L's for tone and headroom, then put in nice hot preamp tubes like JJECC803S. Those pre tubes are rich and robust, and will make the preamp give a great clean tone, and enough push to get the gain channel sweet and smooth. If all you wanted was maximum gain, Groove Tube 12AX7C's are the ones to get.

Re: Using low output tubes with "hi-gain" amps

JJ's aren't available over here :(

I was thinking of like putting a full set of 4 Sovtek 12AX7LPS into the preamp stage... just because you said in your higain shootout that they are good and they are available over here ;)
Or would I be better off with putting just one 12AX7LPS in V1 and fill the others with Sovtek 12AX7WAs? Or are there other better average output tubes than the WAs? (non JJs)

As for EL34s my choice is unfortunately quite limited to Mesa, EH and Svetlana, but I might just keep em stock aswell

Btw how does grainy sound like? Is that good or bad? :smack:

Btw² you once gave me this link http://www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/12ax7.html
Is it really true that the tubes vary THAT MUCH in output?

thanks
