Using mini toggle as selector switch.

Hey all,

I'm feeling a bit stumped. I putting a guitar together for a friend, it's a Strat-a-Like with a hum bucker in the bridge and a single in the neck. I have planed to and drilled to mount an On-On-On mini toggle to use as a selector switch to get either or both of these pickups. Essentially, the idea is use it in place of a traditional Les Paul style 3 way toggle switch.

Looking at diagrams I can find online make sense to my switch, ie up or down connects both sides to centre, but the middle sends one side upend the other down.

I'm not afraid to modify the switch if necessary!

Any help would be appreciated.

It's easy peasy. You connect the neck to the top 2 lugs, bridge to the bottom 2, and line out to the middle 2.

Awesome. Thanks. Now that I see it, it makes sense. I was thinking too hard!

You guys rock.

I find this to so often be the case with guitar wiring - even the most ingenious setups can seem so obvious once they're laid out for you :)

That same thing happened to me when I went to wire up my mini toggle as a selector switch. I tried to figure it out on my own and I couldn't. Then when I looked at the easy diagram I was like oh bloody hell!

One of my Steinbergers came with that switch being used as a pickup selector switch. The only thing bad I can say about it, is that if you switch your pickups a lot (like I do), the corners will catch your hand. Ouch!

I’m curious… Why not just use a normal toggle switch?

The plan was to build a minimalist guitar. It’s an HS Strat with a single volume, and the tiny toggle fit the aesthetic, sorry about the sideways pic.

Re: Using mini toggle as selector switch.

you could use a push-pull pot to change the pickups without drilling this great looking body...

Maybe I'm just weird but for me push pull pots make me biased towards the down position. Pulling it up seems, psychologically, to be a temporary thing and I always feel that going back to the down setting is "home".

Since changing the coil tap on my jazz bass to a mini toggle rather than a push pull I feel equally comfortable at either setting without thinking either should be default.
